ok it's been a while and I want to give y'all an update. Some of you may remember my initial post were I introduced my car, and my cracked block situation.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=101766

A few days ago I acquired my solution which is an 04 Aviator engine w97k miles and planned on swapping over my MM stuff then dropping it in. After removing the oil pan I found large pieces of one of the chain guides. I also believe that the timing could somehow be off a bit because when I rotate the engine over by hand it snags up a bit in a certain spot possibly a valve contacting a piston. If so I do have a good set of heads ready to go..

What I need help and advice on is getting the engine back timed correctly. The chains are already off so it is definitely out of wack. I could get the crank back to tdc on #1 no problem..., but how do I get the cams back in spec w/out causing further damage?

Thanks.

There are 25 vids on YouTube how to time the heads at 12 o'clock to the chains

Maybe this 4.6 mod stuff resonates a lot easier with y'all, this is literally my 1st ford and 1st dohc ENGINE to deal with.

And yes you are correct there are a good amount of videos because I searched for over 2hrs however they are 95% SoHC stuff and I didn't know if it was the same process for dohc. AGAIN my 1st ford/mod motor period.

I am just trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible to set it right the 1st time.

But I do appreciate your responses nonetheless.

The link I provided was the one I used my first time doing it. All I can say is rip in and it will all make sense once your hands are on it.

Narrow your search to.... dohc 4.6 chains

Ummm reading your post, you are turning the crank over and the heads are still on but no chains? You just ruined some valves.

You wouldn't do that on a pushrod engine, why would you do that to a dohc?

Buy a timing set with tensioners and guides, buy some head bolts and head gaskets. Tear it apart and if you have questions ask away

Or find a unopened aviator engine, hope yours is ok since it's kinda apart

Thanks justBob.

Turbov6Bryan when I was rotating the engine the chains were still on. However, I did remove the chains without the cam holding tool so I could have possibly caused some damage just barely when they snapped back from spring tension.

I got the timing stuff figured out today and still when I rotated the engine with everything assembled it would rotate smoothly, bind up pretty good, then rotate smoothly if I forced it over the hump. Same way it was doing before I touched the chains in the 1st place. Going to pull the heads and get this thing going.

Thanks again y'all.

Your just feeling the force of the valve springs probably.

The Ford Racing head changing kit is the best price.

Also, I like to use the Ford Racing timing kit. VERY complete.
