View Full Version : Lost 4th gear? you're gonna want to see this.

shortly after installing my "new-used" trans, I think it actually went into 4th gear maybe once. after that it would go 1-2-3-neutral. the 3-4 shift would just free rev. ALSO important to note was manual second gear would no longer engine brake....hmmm. Long story short, after doing some research, I dropped my valve body and saved myself well over a thousand dollars. seriously. look what I found:

Middle of last picture, you can see where the end of the snap ring ended up sticking the valve that controls 3-4. Total cost: $14 for new gaskets. Its worth doing yourself, as soon as you go to a dealership or trans shop and say "4r70w, no 4th gear, neutraling out, and free revving," They're immediately going to give you the whole "OHHH trans is toast, full rebuild, slipping band etc etc." Its not that bad, although very messy. I got tranny fluid everywhere. And whatever you do, do NOT flip it over or else you will lose your check balls. Hope this helps some.

And here is the post I referenced before starting the job:

Yup, this is somewhat common and an easy fix. Good job!

BTW they sell 3'x4' metal drip pans at Autozone for like $7. Makes a HUGE difference catching all the non stop dripping.

Also, it will catch your "balls" for you and they only go in the round channels of the VB so no worries to dump them out next time.

Trans pan with a drain plug = no fluid shower.

Wrong. Removing the VB is ALWAYS a non stop shower..

Take the valve body out and it'll drip for hours

No drain plugs gonna fix that

Bobs right, those pans are nice

Use grease to hold your balls in place

Yep, this is a fairly common failure, but seems to happen more often on F150 trucks. I have come across some Police cars that have the issue as well, it appears the snap rings are failing from excessive heat. most aftermarket rebuild kits include a hardened "black" snap ring.

This is the snap ring from an F150 truck I worked on a few years ago. basically broke in a lot of pieces and we fished broken snap ring bits of the valve body for an hour or so.

wow! Youre actually the guy I was hoping would see this thread lol. Wanted to ask you, is it necessary to put the tiny filter back in that falls out from under the valve body? I didnt.

My tranny man pointed out this failure point and said it was common. He replaces the snap ring with a spiral ring that does not fail in that manner.

What you are talking about is in a different part of the trans

no need to reuse the filter, you can discard it.

Wrong snap ring, boss. The aftermarket spiral snap ring holds the mechanical diode one way roller clutch on the reverse drum, the factory snap ring is notorious for failing.
