View Full Version : Oil pan baffles

I know the function of oil pan baffles. What I do not know is how critical their are for street use. I plan on driving hard in corners, but I have no plans to do any flat, drag or race track type driving.
So, are oil pan baffles mandatory or a nice-to-have?

I remember a brief discussion about 10 years ago.
If you do a search I don't think you will find much on it.
I know a few members have auto crossed w/o reporting any issues.
Do you have a list of all your proposed performance mods to put it into perspective?

Agreed, as I searched and found very little.

I didn't do anything with baffles per se, but I did put in a windage tray. And aftermarket oil pan. I had to modify the sump to clear something, I believe it was the passenger side header. The pan may have had integral baffles, I can't recall after all these years.
Edit: the pan did have integral baffles http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showpost.php?p=447854&postcount=27

It appears most high performance cars have a windage tray and slosh baffles.

The engine uses a new oil pan with extra baffles and windage tray to keep the oil where needed under hard acceleration.

I am not familiar with your engine build enough to know what was changed as respects the oil pan or pick up.
Based on what I see you don't need anymore than what the stock MM has.

I have a Canton performance oil pan (forget the model #). Apparently I only have a windage tray - no baffles, crank scraper or recovery pouch.

Talk to lifespeed about this, I remember him posting about it not too long ago.
Just remember if youre swinging donuts, hit a figure 8 every now and then so you can be sure the oil pump isnt sucking dry :D

I seem to recall somebody trying it long ago and it hit the crossmember. Maybe the design has changed since then.

The Moroso 20555 fits with no room to spare. It's dimensions are 6 7/8 for the pan area with the drain plug. As the Canton above is 9 1/4 for the same area, I worry about interference with the cross member.

When putting in a higher performance motor, an aftermarket performance oil pan offers:
* increased capacity
* windage tray and baffles to keep oil centered in the pan
* reduces the risk of starving the engine of oil in hard cornering

Do you know anybody who has upgraded the suspension, brakes, wheels and tires enough to slosh the oil up the side of the pan? It is a known issue with performance cars in general, don't want to roll the dice on a $20K (or more) engine.

I have done all of that and have yet to have a (known) problem because of the oil pan. In hindsight, maybe I should have added a better oil pan in my rebuild. To me you might as well add it, especially with how much you are doing to the engine. It certainly won't hurt.

I say, put one on if it concerns you. they may or may not fit compared to stock pan. Somebody has to be a first at it, before others follow.

Can't speak for Lowndex, but my approach is to use the Moroso 20555 pan (a proven fit for the Marauder) and have an oil pan fabricator install trapdoor baffles for oil control, along with a Melling 273S Mustang pickup. Whether the pickup needs to be modified as well remains to be seen. Fits fine as-is in an unmodified pan, we'll see where the baffles want to locate it.

also remember, most of these newer high-po cars run to 8000, 9000 rpm. Marauder? 6800 rpm?. i may be wrong but it is not true apples to apples comparison

This hapoens alot on our forum. A question is posed. A member will respond, "stock is fine", or something along that line. The original question was intended toward members who have used baffles to respond. Cool if you share you feel thete is no need for them. But stop there, please. I am seeking a discussion about the use of oil pan baffles.
I respect your opinion stock enough. Please try to respect my choice to mod something, whether you agree it is needed or just wanted. Hell, suggest a possible solution without a care against need.

Good point - and many times the answer is "Wrong." Ok, then tell me the correct answer or a possible solution.

Like Lifespeed, I am using a Moroso 20555 oil pan with a windage tray and baffles - decision made. The oil pick was selected by KC. The pan fits with little to no room to spare (a finger width against the cross member).
It is as if the oil pan was made for the Marauder. The Canton was returned due to quality problems (bent baffle and excess holes drilled). Also, the pan hung down 3" lower to the ground that the Moroso - possible fail scenario. Worse yet, Bob Canton himself looked at digital photos of the poorly built product and refused to take back the oil pan and credit my monies. The pan was returned to a local distributor, who agreed it was poorly built. Wow!

Yes, I need and welcome advice:
* fyi, I do not think you need X, but if you want the mod, I suggest the following for consideration
* STOP - you are going to screw up your car (reasons why)
* interesting, have your thought about x, y, z?
Telling me my mod choice is a waste of money is going past helpful into judgmental. Just saying.

You've tweaked my curiosity with your project and I'm wondering what your actual goal is Lowndex??
You are building one Hell-of-a drive train into an OLD 4 door "Luxo-Barge" and I can surely appreciate your love of the car and the excitement of your "Hot Rod" project but a 4500# car ain't ever gonna be a FORD GT!!:shake:

I read comments like this a lot. The handling capabilities of this platform are beyond what most members imagine, and is the reason behind the oil pan baffle question.
My car weighs 4150lbs, 52%F, 48% rear. Gonna fix that up some with a trunked battery. Even with me in it, not 4500lbs. Cadillac CTS Vsport (the lighter, good handling version) weighs 3,900lbs. Don't sell the Marauder short.

For these type projects assuming the Car is regularly driven and pushed to it's limits it is a development.
Meaning everything is not perfect and there will be "tweaks", changes, etc.
I have been competitively racing things since I was 9, ain't nothing perfect and the best way to find out is to race it.
