View Full Version : Why do you guys go with slotted or drilled rotors?

My marauder is in need of new front brakes and I am taking this opportunity to upgrade to Zack's kit. It looks like my best price option is advanced auto....two orders with two different 20% off coupons. The rotors I'm looking at are plain and cost $60 each before the discount. I know a lot of people have used rockauto for slotted ($87 each) or Amazon (same as rockauto). Of course, I like the look of slotted/drilled but I don't know if it's worth an extra $90 for me. My car is a dd.

Drilled help with cooling of the rotor, but can crack between holes if get too hot over time. Slotted help let gases out and clean the pad but do wear pads a little faster. For daily driver, a solid rotor is prolly the best for longevity of pads/rotor. Should see what more members have to reply before deciding. Some of it depends on how hard you drive, very aggressive, or normal

Personally I'd go with slotted (only) rotors.
Get a set of pads that work for you.
I assume your also going with the SS hoses - a must.
I'd contact Todd at TCE - a vendor here - (http://www.tceperformanceproducts.com/) for his recommendations.

Yeah, I'm getting SS hoses. I've touched base with Todd and Jerry about available parts. Also, Slotted or solid are the only options I'm considering.

For a DD solid rotors are fine. Slotted rotors add a touch of raciness but will do little for stopping on a DD. Pads are where you need to spend some time researching. For a DD stay away from racing pads as you will never build up the heat needed for them to work properly. Watch this video it's is pretty good.

I'm still using eBay drilled and slotted rotors purchased like seven years ago. No cracks, no warpage..

That was a pretty cool video.
I'm aware of the pros and cons of the different rotors. I was wondering why you guys chose the drilled/slotted vs solid (vented).
I looked up the drilled/slotted on eBay and found some interesting options. Black rotors were pretty cool....of course the black wears off the contact area but supposedly the rest of the rotor stays black and protects against rust and oxidation.

I'm running stock rotors with motorcraft police pads. I'm happy with that combo.
Had drilled & slotted rotors in the past. I personally never got any extra benefit from them other than a very modest reduction in pedal effort to stop the car. Wasn't worth the extra expense to me.
I'd probably just rather save cash up & do the big brake kit.

There will be no discernible benefits from rotor treatments with regard to improved braking performance. An aide in "pad wiping"... a bit of weight reduction...possibly some lower rotor temps...but at the end of the day none of that will be enough to declare them superior.
Any of those can go to "enhance" the overall performance of the package by a small amount yes. But simply swapping to a treated rotor vs a plain finish is not going to shave 10ft off one stopping distance.
Clamping force. Leverage. Frictional coefficient...and Tires. These remain the elements of stopping.

Good video. Makes me curious about the engineering behind the caliper adapter bracket we are using in Zach's brake kit.

Me too. Does the adapter bracket make it a fixed caliper vs floating? I'm going to read through the zack's big brake thread again. I thought this has been addressed.

I think the only thing the adapter does is re-position the mounting holes. So the question I have is how does this affect the flexing this guy is saying is designed into the brake system.

SS brake lines next on the list.

Glad people found the video I posted informative. Standard or Slotted, either one will work for you.
I've had both, currently on my MM I have Raybestos R-300 performance rotors with matches their Advance Tech pads, real good initial bite, low dust and quiet.

I bought some kevlar pads that will go on in the spring before the ss lines so I can see the differences each makes.

slotted Raybestos W/ FMC police pads , They are hanging in there & no adverse affects . maybe some brake dust but no other issues.

Bracket is used to relocate the mounting holes.
It is a floating caliper system if single side piston(s) in caliper.
Fixed caliper requires piston(s) on both sides of the rotor.

The drills were originally designed to intercool the rotors due to old fashion asbestos pads which they used to burn the rotors. No one used asbestos pads any more. The slotted were designed to clean and allow the dust away from the breaking contact. Drilled rotors usually break.

I have cross-drilled & slotted rotors on all of my car. This is both on DD and show/race cars.
I have never had any of the cracks written about on the internet blogs.
I also painted the calipers (with POR-15 brake paint) to add with their show appeal.

Funny how I have yet to hear or see of a drilled rotor cracking on this website of heavy cars with small brakes..
Most of which, including mine, are poverty EBay rotors on top of that!

Cracked rotors probably won't happen when you're driving Miss Daisy ;)

The '93 Mustang and the '04 Marauder have had these rotors for most of their lives. Notice...no cracks!
I have had the same results on my FFR kit Cobra, and the other three Mustangs.

Just because guys here don't talk about it doesn't mean it doesn't happen
