View Full Version : Cold weather has it ticking

When I start the car when it's really cold (below 15) I'll hear a slight ticking sound. I'll rev it to 2,000RPM and it'll go away and go back to normal. This especially happens when the car has been sitting for over a week. I'm assuming this is a fuel injector or something getting stuck when it's too cold?

This is no where near the lose spark plug issue I had a few years back. Rev it and it's fine. Drives fine too and you wouldn't hear the tick unless you tuned in for it. I don't always have to rev it, sometimes it'll be fine after I put it in gear and drive it.

Anything to worry about? What could this be?

Thanks!

My black 207k does it. Now since it's really cold out, it's not going away

I believe on my car it's the rocker arm lash adjusters are gummed up, or not squirting

Some folks call them lifter tappets

Zack also talks about clogged oil restrictors?
I'm not sure if ours are like this

But I'll tear into mine sometime to check for bad lash adjusters

Dom, what oil and filter are you using? Cold oil is very thick compared to oil at operating temp, and it's likely just a little varnish or something in one of the HLAs. You could try a Seafoam treatment or a can of MMO, but for God's sake don't go for any of those "motor flushes" or any other snake oil.

Also, oil filters with a nitrile ADBV tend to get hardened with age and cold and allow oil to drain back down. Use a good filter with a silicone ADBV (like the Motorcraft FL820S).

I'm due for an oil change. Sounds like it's simple as that.

Thank you all.
