FYI, leaving a handicap parking tag on the rear view mirror while driving may cause the mirror to maladjust.

A recent change in my condition qualified me as handicapped so this mirror thing is a new experience.

There is a sensor on the windshield side of the mirror and the handicap tag covers it. So i'm storing the tag in the console while driving.

Cheers.

In Ohio it is a requirement to remove the tag before driving.

I could never understand driving around with it in place, it obscures your field of view.

Louisiana as well. Learn something new every day. I called the local police and the desk officer didn't even know about the tag, Humm.

Turns out it's a state administered program.

It seems odd that you would need a handicap tag on the mirror, don't you have handicap license plates in the states?

Of course but the way it works is that the tag is registered to the owner, not to the car. That allows you to take the tag from one vehicle to another.

You hang it from the mirror when parked in a handicap only spot and as said, you can switch vehichles or have a friend drive you and still park in spot.

I see, we don't have handicap plates here only mirror tags.

The second part of this equation is the ID card that identifies you has handicapped. To be in compliance you must have a removable vehicle tag (or special license plate) AND an ID card.

I see, many times, where non-handicapped people borrow "grandma's" car and park in handicapped slots.

I talked to patrol officers and was informed that they would respond to a complaint by a citizen, but in reality that's not an efficient use of police assets.

It's really an honor system.

PS: Hey RCR, is that tag expired?

All we have is an ID card, the actual tag itself isn't registered so you could just get a random handicap tag to hang on your mirror and park in the handicap spots. There is no way to find out if the car is entitled to park there unless you find the driver with the ID card.
