View Full Version : Car needs burp often... why?

Simple as that. I need to burp the system about once a month. I haven't noticed any obvious leaks and had the car pressure tested before. Last time it was O rings by the cross over tube that were bad and cause a very slow leak. Now I can't find anything and the car will go weeks or months without issue and then it needs to be burped, especially in winter.
My only assumption is this is because I used to top off the car with water instead of anti-freeze during the summer and now this is happening? The car has been getting anti-freeze and NOT water since october.
Is there anything I should look for? Car runs fine, but like I said needs a burp every month or two.
Thanks in advance.

50/50 will give about a -34 freeze point.
70 coolant/30 water will give about a -69 freeze point.
Running 100% coolant is less able to transfer heat away from the engine.

Your slowly loosing coolant
Put some antifreeze dye in it and run it for a week, hit it with the light and see where the dye is escaping the motor
Could be water pump
Heater core
Heater hose
Drain on radiator
Coolant hose
Head gasket lmao
Park it on white paper in the garage overnight

Good advice.
Thank you.

My wife's Explorer had a pinhole leak in the radiator that was barely detectable other than the overflow reservoir kept going dry.

Is it just not enough heat? My F150's thermostat o-ring was bleeding off steam and giving me barely warm heat. Hard to diagnose as there was absolutely nothing leaking.

My heat works fine.
The car hasn't been this dependable in years, now that it's stock.
Little things are going as any car this age and mileage would.

Mine does the same thing. In my case, it's the bleed fitting on the COT. The o-ring is flat and coolant just slowly steams out of it. The only way I noticed was 1. My COT is rusty as hell, I got it completely dry once and happened to have my hood open a couple weeks later. The rust was damp around the mating surface and slightly below it. No drops, my res. never went low.

If you put pressure to the system with one of these, you can usually find the leak in minutes:

First off, what initiates you to burp the system? Does it begin to overheat? Does the overflow bottle go low? Loose heat?
You should not be checking your coolant level at the crossover without an issue.
Another issue to consider is a potential head gasket concern allowing combustion gasses into the cooling system.
A pressure test would be a good starting point. Fill the system and connect a pressure tester. Apply 17psi and perform a visual inspection for external coolant leaks. If no external coolant leaks are present a combustion gas block test can help to diagnose a failing head gasket or cracked head/block.

Hey my mm is over heating. It started after I changed the extended oil filter housing gasket. I changed the thermostat an radiator. Some one said I have air in the system some were. How do I go by getting it out. Or do I need to change the water pump to. It has never ran hot ever. Until I changed that gasket

I've drained and refilled many times.....changed water pumps and thermostats and NEVER had to "burp" it in 268,000 MILES!!:bows:
