View Full Version : Marauderville 15!!!

It's Time!!! Marauderville 15 in 2017 !!!
The time to plan Marauderville 15 is upon us!! Can you believe it's been fifteen years since some of us met in Ennis, TX at the "Marauder Round-up!" !!
Here are the criteria and timeframe for proposals. MM.Net Administration will review the proposals, which must be submitted by March 1, 2017. Look for an announcement in Late March 2017 for MV15!! (email address below)
Criteria for Marauderville 15
Lodging
Hotel must be affordable. Someone MUST make an on-site visit to determine available facilities.
Amenities: King and Two Queen rooms; High Speed Internet (preferably at no extra charge); dining room, banquet facility, bar all on-site or within close proximity; pool preferred.
The hotel must be able to offer a block of no less than 40 rooms and have ample parking. Security is a high priority.
Itinerary
¼ or 1/8 mile drag strip, Road course or oval track within a reasonable distance and the cost of use. Test and Tune is a very affordable option. Not a requirement but the Members do enjoy the opportunity.
Things to see and do: plant/factory tours, museums, breweries, local culture, Cruises, anything automotive and/or transportation related a plus.
Car Show with awards
Maraudervilles have traditionally been a Thursday through Sunday event, though other days to fit a specific scheduled event would be fine. Early Fall would be ideal, although other times will be considered depending on circumstances such as events we can piggyback on.
Consider the distances needed to travel in between itinerary locations as well as traffic and turns.
Down time and time to socialize are important so there's no need to fill every minute of the day.
Responsibilities of Planning Team
Communication and follow-through are the most important tasks for the Team. MM.Net will provide a closed forum for the Planning Team so all communications and tracking are in once place.
Site visits to potential hotels and all proposed venues.
Contact and pricing for awards. If you have no one local, we can provide info from prior vendors that served us well.
T-shirt design: The Planning Team should come up with a design/logo concept that the graphic artist can create. Local design and screen printing is fine. Deadline for final graphic is critical to the timeline.
Contact Supporting Vendors and local area businesses and Chamber of Commerce for support of MV15.
Manage as a team any fundraising opportunities to help reduce the cost of Registration for Attendees.
Proposal:
Planning team names, phone numbers and email addresses.
Very tentative itinerary.
Hotel options and pricing.
Projected costs for any itinerary options such as admissions, fees, rentals, meals, catering, insurance, etc. It is OK to suggest "meal on your own."
Use 100 people as a guideline for costs.
Relate why you feel Marauderville 15 should be at your location. What makes it “special & unique”?
Any members of previous planning teams would be more than happy to share their experiences. Mary also works closely with the team, drawing on her 15 years of planning experience. MM.Net pays all the bills and if you must front money, you will be reimbursed with receipts. MM.Net manages the Eventbrite and PayPal functions. MM.Net also contributes financially, using the Membership and Vendor funds collected throughout the year to help reduce the Attendees out of pocket costs.
Please submit your proposal to MM.Net@MercuryMarauder.Net by March 1, 2017.
The most important part of planning and execution is a dedicated group of people - doesn't need to be many - that can follow through with all aspects of the event. Also, not everyone on the Planning Team needs to live in the proposed Host Site.
If you have any questions, please email MM.Net@MercuryMarauder.Net or talk to Dan or Mary.

Update:
No proposals or even discussions have materialized for Marauderville 15. Such a milestone year. Since no local few have stepped forward, would a few interested people from around the country be willing to join forces for what will be the Last Marauderville? Almost all of the organizing can be done on the phone and email. A walk-though of the hotel to confirm amenities would be the only necessary in-person task.
Any ideas or volunteers? Please chime in here or send me a PM.
Thank you!!

My Dear Friend, Mary, Has it really been that long ? It seems like yesterday that a group of people bought a black car that that Mercury called "the First Hot Rod of the 21st Century" and in the first year of sales managed to put together a convention of 57 Marauders from 23 states in Texas ( 2 were already supercharged) .Police escorts because they thought we were President Bush's new Secret Service cars.
Marty O's visit changed his life ( right Marty ?) Logan was the power behind the whole thing.Anybody know where Logan is now ? We all owe him a lot. Indy the next year--over 100 Marauders . Detroit next with over 90 cars. I guess the most fun was 18 Marauders in caravan for over 100 miles at 80+ and 1/2 car length between us. By this time we had developed into one of the greatest families--a bunch of best friends. Chat nite we stayed up til after midnight to shoot the breeze . Local groups were filling car shows with over 20 Marauders at a time. Sponsors were giving away superchargers (right Mary ?). Do you know how many of the first 100 members of MM.net still own their Marauders ? Well, I have to sign off for now. To all you great folks that helped change my life---Thanks.It's hard to say goodby to a Golden Era but time passes and lives change To all you present Marauder owners I wish you the best of luck and remember----drive safely, but with Gusto !!! So long for now, Cruzer (Maury) :burnout:

My Mustang club has attended several national shows hosted at the Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference center, in Sturbridge Mass. This hotel is awesome. It is on a lake, with a great colonial restaurant on the property. The parking lots are huge. It is 10 minutes from Old Sturbridge Village.
The Mustang Club of New England has been the host club.

Must be a popular or convenient spot for car and motorcycle clubs. I stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Sturbridge, MA two years ago enroute to a one-week vacation in Rockland, ME. Harley owners were all over the place. The Hampton is about 1/4 mile from the conference center. It's a full days drive from Virginia via I-81, I-78, I-287, and CT15. Planned for 8 hours ... Took us 12 with traffic. CT and MA drivers suck. Nice location; but I didn't see much for activities in that area.

We did a Rusty Wallace NASCAR driving experience at Stafford race track. The track is not that far from Sturbridge, about 20 miles. You take Rt 19 and you are there.

Doesn't have to be a new location, re-do a previous MV. It will be new to most of the attendees and the fun level will be the same no matter what.
I had so much fun at the 4 I've attended I wouldn't mind re-doing Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, etc. H3LL ofagreattime!

I've only been to a few, but have had fun at all. If a repeat is OK, and you think this might be the last year, why not finish it where it all began, Texas.

there may not be a Marauderville, nobody put in a proposal by march 1.or whatever date it was required. a proposal is not just suggesting an area. it's doing all the research etc. required in the outline. If there is one, it may be the last.

im just saying. Its easy to say lets have marauderville at X. when you live in X. Maybe I will submit a formal proposal? I work full time and when im not working im working on 1 of 3 cars etc. So its hard to sit down and plan it out. But maybe I will. Thats not my point though. My point is that, if we are going to have a marauderville, (possibly the last, you said??????) Why not make it so everyone has a fair chance to go this time. for many years it was east coast. Just recently a first time west coast. Now this time why dont we have something central. Especially if its the last like you say!

Most of us can say the same thing, one or two houses to take care of, a half-dozen cars to maintain, a full time job, a motorcycle I haven't had time to ride in over a year, etc, etc.
The bold sentence says all that needs to be said about it. The requests to "somebody put in all the effort to have it close to me instead in their own region, and then I'll come to it" are distractions and are counter-productive. All that does is discourage the people who would actually do the foot-work to organize an event. So maybe there won't be one at all.

And the Marauderites have their own mountain.
MV15 held in conjunction with All Ford Nationals is a workable idea. The MM.net could announce the event, and everybody can just show up. Make your own arrangements and meet on Marauder Mountain. Bring your own food, drink, chairs and a little extra. Informal.
There is another thread about the All Ford Nationals, see events forum. Ms Denmark and Mr. Man have done a lot of preliminary work already.

There is another thread about the All Ford Nationals, see events forum. Ms Denmark and Mr. Man have done a lot of preliminary work already.
I don't care where it happens or with FFN or whatever, as long as it happens.
If MV has to morph itself to remain viable, why wouldn't it???
Allowing it to die due to changing times is sad & not acceptable IMHO.
I hate the term but let's think outside the box folks!
The only requirement is enough advanced warning to be able to block out the calendar.

Simple fact is this, nobody wants to commit to doing what it really takes to actually plan this... then when they do, there are a bunch of individuals who behind the scenes complain or are not satisfied with the result. TRUTH is we lost a huge portion of our comrades when the site split up. BOTH sides are too stubborn to say they are sorry and move on. This will die out due to attrition... very sad but it happens to all "clubs" sooner or later...

Yes, I know this is true. What happened reduced the site to a pittance of what it was in a very short time.
I am sorry I found it so close to the end... :depress:
BUT this truth does not mean I have to accept it w/o a struggle to keep it going as best as I can... hoping for at least 15 to happen... after that we'll deal with at that time.
This notion has merit, probably not for 2017 Carlisle. Too late.
However, there still several Fun Ford Weekend events that are scheduled in various parts of the country, from July to November that we could use as a basis for a MARAUDER CONGRESS.
Google Fun Ford Weekend for the schedule.
Instead of one club hosting the event the leadership at MM.Net, Modded Marauders.net and Motor City Marauders.com could select one date, make a coordinated announcement and let the memberships take it from there.
Individuals, groups or clubs could participate as they are led, informal.

It doesn't matter. The same people who show up at Carlisle are the same ones who routinely attend Marauderville after driving nearly 1,000 miles or more. Seems most others are waiting for Marauderville to magically show up in their backyard.

I make the Carlisle experience every year because I really enjoy meeting with the group. It also fits into my teaching calendar. I am a college professor, and my "free time" is often dictated by the institution.
As for the Marauderville events: Unfortunately, I have only attend four. Again, because of my teaching schedule. I would love to go to all them. However, from September 1st through the second week in May, I am committed to the college.
To those who have the ability to go to these Marauder weekends, JUST GO! You will have a great time.

Love all the ideas, but there needs to be a proposal put together from a dedicated few that are willing to do the legwork, with feet on the ground. Read the first post here: https://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=103310
Linking in with an existing event is fine. We did that for our first Marauder Roundup in Ennis, TX and with the IMOA in Indy for MV2.
We can't please or accommodate everybody. It has been proven that some will drive thousands of miles to attend or fly in.
I also have no problem suggesting we hold MV every other year. I strongly encourage and support local and regional gatherings, though those numbers are fewer and fewer each year. I applaud the Carlisle and Louisville annual gatherings for continuing to capture the Spirit of friendship and camaraderie. I do understand that some have limited vacation time and or need to select vacation time early in the year.
I know first hand that it's a fair amount of work, with communication and follow up paramount to pulling it off. Kudos to all those that have dedicated their time in years' past to make all past events possible. It comes down to a few raising their hands and sticking with it.

Serious consideration was made to submit a proposal for Marauderville in Seattle. I did all the legwork for Las Vegas (MV13) while in Seattle, so pretty sure putting together an event in my own backyard would be pretty easy comparatively.
I have suggested a dual coast Marauderville. One on the west coast and one on the east coast at the same time.

What about making Marauderville into a Power Tour type event??? With nobody stepping forward for even one city as of now, I find it unlikely that there would be enough cooperation/interest in planning multiple cities in succession.
There's actually still time to plan a decent meet for September.
Shame it was in Cleveland last year or I'd try and whip something up here.

Mr. Man and I would not have any objection to Cleveland a second time. Last years event was great! I could spend another day at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for sure!
Also, I would love to be part of planning Marauderville again. I really enjoyed it! The year Eric and I were on the committee we had a very committed group and it was a pleasure to work with all of them. Unfortunately I cannot do it this year except to be supportive in a secondary role. Depending on when it may be I will be very willing, for example, to help out at the event.

On the 2014 Power Tour, one of the stops was in Charleston, WV. They had cars lined along the Kanawha River. It was an absolutely beautiful cruise-in and there were a ton of cars.
So, if someone is nearish Charleston, here's some legwork on doing a MV there.
This is either stuff I was either aware of from my 2014 visit, or found online by doing a quick Google search:
Rather large car show (October 4-8th): http://www.charlestonwvcarshow.com
Dragstrip: Although the Kanawha Valley Dragway is 40mi/minutes away, their website (http://www.kanrace.com/kvmp_schedule.html) says "closed until further notice" so...the next closest is in Fort Gay, WV - Tri-River Dragway. That's 81mi/1h22min away. Per their Facebook, they were racing on May 13th.
Hatfield Family Cemetery: For the history buffs, the final resting place of 'Devil Anse' Hatfield (of Hatfields & McCoys fame) is 68mi/1h20min south in Sarah Ann, WV. There are some rather fun roads between Charleston and the cemetery. Note: the cemetery is up a rather steep hill and parking is street-side.
Distillery: the Appalachian Distillery (http://appalachian-moonshine.com/) is 33mi/minutes up I-77 in Ripley. Have not been here, but it could be neat.
Hotel: I personally stayed at the Holiday Inn Express - Charleston Civic Center (https://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/charleston/crwcc/hoteldetail) during that night of Power Tour. It was rather nice, and would suit MV attendees just fine, but the bar within walking distance has since closed down. There are, however, several bars and hotels on the eastern side of the Kanawha River.
With nobody stepping forward for even one city as of now, I find it unlikely that there would be enough cooperation/interest in planning multiple cities in succession.

As I only attended parts of MV due to work (and was sick with some pretty gnarly tonsillitis & fever while I was in attendance - promise I'm a lot more animated and conversational normally!) Gordon, you are like the old cartoon character form Li'l Abner, Joe Btfsplk. Everywhere you go misfortune seems to follow you, no food, cold food, bad service etc. I have seen it happen to you on numerous occasions and at numerous venues. You are just blessed with bad luck(except for marrying Chris). I am not aware of anyone having problems at CLE, unlike the TERRIBLE hotel at the last Michigan meet. Sorry about your bad luck, but everyone really enjoyed all of the activities. With the number of visits you have made to CLE, perhaps you could offer some other hotel suggestions and activities. Since you are retired and are somewhat knowledgeable of the area, give ADAM a shout and get a proposal for MV!! Just sayin'

On the contrary I have very good luck and have enjoyed many great vacations. I speak up when someone treats me wrong or service sucks. I also give praise when praise is deserved.
The Cleveland meet was great and I had a wonderful time, just that the hotel sucked, not as bad as the one in South Haven, but it sucked none the less. So instead of putting me down and belittling me, come up with a plan Dan.

Norwalk,OH. Summit motor sports track, nhra events there in summer about an hour or so
West Salem, OH. Dragway 42 reopening in a week after $10million in renovations, ihravevents held here. about an hour plus away.
road courses are generally high dollar rental for a day. $2000 and up estimated

Dragstrip distance/time from the Embassy Suites in Independence:
Summit Motorsports Park: 53.7mi, 58min :alone:
Thompson Raceway Park: 50.6mi, 55min :(
Dragway 42: 47.7mi, 49min :D
As far as road course rental is concerned, this is a direct quote I got from NLRC management last year when I was considering a fall rental with my Lake County pals:
We are currently renting out the track only for private track rentals at $2,000 per day Monday through Thursday and $2,500 per day from Friday through Sunday. This is a full day from 9-5, so lots of track time. Gates would open at 8 to allow the event to come in and set up and gates would close at 7. This is bare bones without corner workers or having an ambulance there, but the entire facility would be the renters. We can provide the ambulance at a cost of $110 per hour and the number of corner workers depending on what type of cars and number of participates would be running at $100 per worker.
With our insurance policy it would allow six hot cars on the track at a time but as many as you would like waiting ready to go. For example the group this weekend, has three groups of six constantly rotating all day in twenty five minute intervals. The renters this weekend, have hired five corner workers to cover the track, this worked as they had mostly experienced guys running. With just having six cars, we do not need to have an ambulance there but we highly suggest it! It is up to the renter to stage groups and decide how to go about that. Track experience is up to the renters of what they feel comfortable with.
I do not know that this is CURRENT pricing, but does confirm what was posted above - road course rental is a pricey proposition.

^^^Talk is cheap. Thank you to all who have put forth ideas. There have been lots of great ideas thrown around which are fun to talk about....now Someone actually has to put the proposal together (prolly 2 or 3 someones) and get it to Mary ASAP. MV is usually all set by mid winter so unless plans are being rapidly implemented and get approved very soon there's really no point in continuing the conversation. Time has run out. As much as I'd love to I can't make the time to work on it myself, unfortunately, but I wish I could. Eric and i would make every effort to attend if something is firmed up soon. Things I don't need at a Marauderville:
1. Goodie bag. I didn't take one the last time I was there. Let's not stress a whole team of people that think they have to have a bunch of worthless trinkets in a bag with a name badge.
2. A car show. I don't need another trophy (unless you are handing out Wally's, and then I have to earn it) If you want to look under my hood, a hug or a handshake will get that done. (it does all fit under the hood now) You know me, I'm easy!
3. Escorts through towns. Small groups doing small group things with their friends is fine, but I've never felt comfortable holding up traffic for the locals.
4.Raffle. Seriously. No.
5. Let's not try to get Steve Babcock up on a stage again. I would guess if he wants to join us, we don't need to put him in front of everyone again. I respect him too much.
6. Zack. Just kidding. Zack is OK. :D

Just for fun since i do love Iowa I tried the Mason City Hampton Inn thinking that the Clear Lake area might be nice in late Sept. for a casual Marauder get together without the bells and whistles. The best I could do was $151/ night for a block of 15 rooms. Pretty sure that price point is too steep. I can check closer to home at The Best Western in Harrisburg, PA. We've used it many times and the area has stuff to do like Harley, Gettysburg, Amish country etc. I'll be happy to make hotel arrangements and leave it at that. I agree with John that getting together is what matters most. I'll call the hotel today and see what I can do. Also, John if you have any ideas in Iowa I am off today and can do the legwork to check things out.

OK I just got off the phone with a contact in Gettysburg. He will send me a proposal later today for a hotel in Gettysburg with dates (3-4 nights) sometime from Sept through early October. I also have a call out to the hotel in Harrisburg and am waiting for a call back. If I get reasonable rates I'll sign a contract for a room block, post up the details and see if anyone wants to come. Won't even try to be MV but will be a chance to get together. i'll keep you posted.

Zack is OK. :DI agree with this, it cuts down on a whole lot of the set up work. I was looking into setting up something (NOT AN MV!) in late september, early October, but I've got a huge exam coming up this week, that I have been studying for since May, and weekends have been too busy to do some visits. May have to delay it till next year, especially if Mr & Mrs D's work come to fruition.
Just need an excuse for a get together! :help:

Following up on TooManyFords idea of a regional meet in Iowa! Location is Waterloo, IA. Dates would be 8/30/17 check-in (Wed) checking out 9/3/17 (Sun). It is the Labor day Weekend. The Hampton Inn can give us a 10 room block. The rate is $129/nite double occupancy. Iowa is a beautiful state with lots of country roads. There are a lot of things to see and do in and around Waterloo/Cedar Falls area, like John Deere factory for one. The Amana Colonies are a great cruise destination a bit further away. I'm heading straight for Taylor's Maid-rite in nearby Marshalltown for loose meat sandwiches.

John says he will be at the local track on the 2nd so that should be entertaining and worth the trip alone!
http://racecfmp.com/
Unless I hear otherwise from interested members, I will sign the Hampton Inn contract for the 10 rooms and reservations will be on a first come first served basis. The block will close on July 28th. It's not Marauderville but it is a great place to spend some time with each other. For me it's going back home.
I'll post a new thread when everything is settled.

Confused? Why can't this meet be MV-XV?
IA is about 1000 miles from Philadelphia.
Easy day and half ride.

If you do show up for this, the race track is having Midnight Mania with racing till 1AM. It's always a good time and we can have a bon fire at the track.

Although this is not MV, it should be a great time! Other than a possible tour of John Deere and John (TooManyFords) at the local racetrack (which will be awesome) I don't have any plan. But as I've mentioned earlier, there are things to do and see if people want to get together and do them! Since it doesn't look like a traditional MV will happen this year I'm thinking it's more of a regional meet. Once I sign the hotel contract I'll do a thread with all the info. Hope it works out and some of you will spend Labor day weekend in Iowa! Thanks to John for a great idea and consider saving the date.

You'd need more than a weekend unless you fly John. More like a week figuring in activities and 1 1/2+ days travel time each way.

Marauders at Waterloo: Hotel contract signed. 10 rooms available at the Hampton Inn, Waterloo, Iowa. Probable activities include John Deere Tour, Racing Sat. night with bonfire at the track and cheering on TooManyFords, optional cruises to Marshalltown, Amana Colonies, Clear Lake and or Field of Dreams or other sightseeing your choice on your own. Will post up details in a new thread tomorrow. Event will be on the Labor Day Weekend so save the dates if interested.

Good choice. That hotel is less than a year old and I work about a mile from it.
The Amana Colonies is also a fine choice. As it gets closer and I know how many are coming, I'll get with Deere to see about the tours. Something to do on a Friday afternoon. And yes, you're welcome to hang out in my garage, but parking is a bit cramped in my tiny neighborhood.

Can this thread be closed. It has been almost 2 years and there is just does seem to be enough interest in holding another MV. Long Live Louisville!
