View Full Version : 8-rib pulley help

Not all of my 8-rib pulley setup fits. The water pump pulley is too deep. Did they change water pump length between '99 and '04? I've got an '04 engine and water pump with a timing cover and 8-rib kit for a '99 Cobra.
I think I need a shallower 8-rib water pump pulley, one meant for an '04. Also, I heard somebody on here mention an 8-rib alternator pulley with over-running clutch existed. Sure would like to find that item if possible. It would probably help with belt slap getting on and off the throttle.
Picture below is of my stock pulley (1" from the rear lip to mounting surface) and the much deeper pulleys from the 8-rib kit. They hit the water pump, aren't far forward enough.
Once you deviate from stock this stuff gets interesting. ;)

I just ran across the 8 rib list a few weeks ago. Not sure if I can find it again.

I'm not sure on the years or models with them but yes, there is long and short water pumps.
Definitely go with the added idler that was previously mentioned.

Once upon a time I had the lip cut off the OEM water pump pulley. It was just enough, but it all had to be aligned just right.

I wonder if I should put on a longer water pump and use the '99 WP pulley? It might be more mechanically correct in terms of centering the pulley load over the WP bearing.

I milled the lip off of the Vortec supplied water pump pulley it worked fine , and you cannot base the water pump pulley off the oem 6 rib pulley , the 8 rib setup has 2 extra ribs making it sit further outboard , you will see once you actually install your pulleys , just make sure the Innovators West is fully seated everything else will be based off of that alignment wise.
An 8 rib will work fine with a milled stock water pump pulley

No need to change the water pump unless its bad.

It would seem the 8-rib WP pulley wants to be used with the longer, old water pump. The short water pump I have isn't going to work, unless there is a custom pulley out there for such a Frankenstein combination.
I think I'll just swap the water pump to make the pulleys line up, seems like that would be following a more factory configuration - if there is such a thing. The accessory drive on this car isn't really Marauder anymore.

Any leads on the 8-rib alternator with clutch? That wouldn't be a '99 Cobra part, would it?

I believe the high flow water pumps are short ones. But not all short ones are high flow.

Stewart (http://www.stewartcomponents.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=81) makes both short and long ones. They aren't too clear if the model year determines the length, I'll have to contact them and find out.

If it's any help to you....
I measured the distance away from the Engine block with no water pump installed. My dads SB has a 6 rib setup on his vortec V2 and on his electric water pump the belt set 1 15/16 away from the engine block, that's where the belt starts the first rib on the water pump pulley
The idler pulley directly under the alternator should be less than 3/4 of a inch from the outside most bracket
This 6 rib idler pulley is 3/4 inch away from the outside bracket
I assume adding 2 more ribs will push everything away from the alternator,
On your blower, what is the distance from blower to pulley? This 6 rib is middle finger tip away, I assume yours will be a lot closer because of 2 more ribs
Hope that helps

Thanks for the pics. I'll let you know in a few days what I find out about the water pump.

The long water pump should arrive today, I installed the 8-rib one-way clutch alternator pulley yesterday. I know some are not a fan and think it isn't necessary, but I don't think it can hurt to let the heaviest accessory over run the belt when the transmission shifts.
I don't have a part number for the OWC 8-rib pulley, but any competent alternator rebuilder should be able to find it. It came from Brazil instead of the usual German origin.
