Oh boy not good. Was driving normally, actually slow in traffic and I heard the god awful sound of a engine running with a spark plug missing. Well sure enough…the coil boot was ripped but the spark plug still in the bore. I put a new boot on and started her up….and that sound again.. this time the plug was out..
What could have caused this? I was not pushing it at all… I will post a pic tomorrow of the plug when I get home…..:(

Aluminum heads with steel spark plug. Your threads ripped out and shot the plug out
You need to have a shop install a steel time sert. Do not attempt helicoil

You will be up and going with time sert, new plug and coil

My old van blew one on the highway. The plugs hadn't been touched in years. They just pop out when the time comes I guess...

i believe the 03 year had 4 threads in the heads for spark plug, 04 revised to 9 threads

and yes, the Timesert insert is the authorized ford repair

That's happened to me in my old Crown Vic when the guy at the garage put in Japanese brand crap instead of the four recommended ones on start up blew right out .

you had a failure of the spark plug threads so it blew out and damaged it, replace it when fixing the head.

Plug shot out, slammed back down and closed the gap.

Well I took a plug out of cylinder 1 and it tightened in the one that blew...cylinder 3.....I put a new plug 1 and it is fine... I still will take it to Dez's Racing to have them fix the threads....but as least I do not need a tow to get there.

thanks everyone for your info..

I would call and ask if the have done it before, and get a price
Call your local ford dealer to compare prices

Napa carries a Delphi? Or motorcraft coil. I believe they are 43.00 per coil

Let us know how it goes

Boroscope the cylinder. You might just find a small piece of ring land broke off. They close the gap on plugs when it happens and may have helped assist in your plug popping out.

Quite common to see broken ring lands it seems.

I just use a Milwaukee 12v inspection camera with the 9MM head. Fits in easily and you can see clearly what's going on if anything.

But yeah, once it's out it bounces and bangs around damaging the hole, the plug, and the coil.
