I think the sulfur/silver issue only really affects GMs and possibly some other makes... I don't recall Ford being part of the manufacturers that use fuel level senders susceptible to this fuel impurity.
... unless it somehow affects wiring harnesses and valve guides. ;)
EDIT: funny how it is just NOW happening south of our border... we went through this VERY same thing with Shell some 2 years ago if not more. Just goes to show how gas companies care about their customer base... if they ain't complainin' don't lift a finger. :nono:
Here in N.O it involves just about all of the Shell & Texaco stations, some of the Exxon & Mobile stations, and a few of the independents. Over 130 stations are closed. The wife's van shows it's been 220 miles since last fill up & it's still showing full. Got a claim # earlier today from Shell.:mad2: So far my car is OK.

Welcome aboard, JAM. Where I work, we had some vehicles come in with fuel guage problems. It is hard to say if it was Shell gas related. The service advisors will probably ask the customers now.

FYI; Chevron and Texaco are the same company and unless you know something I don't I think Shell is still independent. Though I could be wrong.
NY Stock Exchange Symbol: CVX (Chevron/Texaco)
The problem is related to every station served by the Motiva distribution center in Kenner, LA. Many local companies are served by that distribution center & subsequently got contaminated fuel.
I do not expect any problems with Shell - our purchases were with credit card & have receipts.

Thanks for the info. I'm only heading into Kentucky and Tennessee for the holiday, but i'll stay clear of those stations just in case. Shell needs to get on it and find out what's wrong, because this is happening too often with them.
In the New Orleans area it is now up to 25% of our local stations that were affected: 108 Shell & Texaco, 90 Independents, a handful of ExxonMobil, and 40 Chevron stations. There are also indications that the problem may have begun over a week earlier than what was originally reported.
Locally, Chevron is refusing to identify their affected locations, requiring pre-notification prior to repairs, and insists on using their pre-approved repair locations. Shell is accepting claims before, during or after repairs from any mechanic or dealership.
In Florida the problem closed 400 stations in Miami, Tampa, Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale that got their tainted gas from the Mortiva refinery in Norco, La.
Mortiva is the Shell refining arm in the East and South.
Two local lawsuits have already been filed in 2 local parishes claiming that the tainted fuel damaged plaintiffs' vehicles.

I had called Shell before Memorial Day and was contacted by phone this afternoon--this is what I was told by a Fuel Tech at the research center in Houston.
The name change for their Super Premium was made to indicate a new formulation of the 93 octane fuel---the changes were in additives that improve valve cleaning and other detergent properties. It is still a true 93 octane fuel with NO ALCOHOL. He confirmed that they use a different formulation for areas under EPA emissions watch and that these fuels will not perform as well as fuels bought in non-pollution watch areas. He said iin normal operation, you couldn't tell the difference. If you want more info, call 1-877-825-2467 and they will be glad to answer any tech question you have. He also explained that the sulpher screw-up was a quality control problem at one plant and had been corrected. Contact Shell if you have had a problem.
