View Full Version : Replace the EGR valve or use old one?

A new EGR valve is $106. I usually don't put a new engine in with too much old stuff on it. Where does one draw the line? I replaced the throttle position sensor a couple years ago, and bought a new idle air control.

Anybody had an EGR valve stick or fail, and how many miles? I've got 140K on mine.

We are reusing, but $100 isn't so expensive to not do it based on price.

If its not broken why attempt to fix it?

I replace the EGR every 100K miles. it seems to give a better idle, especially when at the bottom of a freeway ramp after running part throttle. The EGR introduces exhaust into the mixture to delay pre-ignition. They get carbon coated inside and maybe this changes the flow rate. I definitely notice an improvement in drivability with a new one. Just my preference.

Everything has a service life. I rebuilt my starter motor too, even though it was still working when I pulled it out. Put a new water pump on also, even though the old one didn't leak. I guess I just believe a new motor should be new, I don't want to have to replace old parts that are half worn when I installed the new engine.
