Got engine and carb rebuilt. New gas, distributor cap, plug wires and plugs. Rotor is pointing to number 1 and car is set at top dead center. Cranks over fine and has a sputter once in a while. Getting gas to the carb no problem and coil has good spark when tested (blue spark). Gap is set to .014 on the points. Firing order is correct. So I'm not sure what it could be. Any suggestions?

Is the distributor 180 degrees out?

Yea we checked to see if it's 180 out and it's not, also I have been flooring it when trying to start haha

Are you sure the wires on the distributor are correctly placed? Had a similar issue once many years ago on a Buick I had. I was one off on the wires. Once wired right it purred like a kitten. Buick V-8 to boot not a Chevy.

Yea checked all the wires more than once. It's getting closer now, I'm still trying to get it goin

Have you tried moving the distributor around a little bit while trying to start? There needs to be a little advance, so right on #1 might be too late.

Ok. So does it start and run?
Your saying it cranks over fine, but sputters.

Who put the timing chain on?

You never say in your description that tdc#1 and rotor pointing to 1, but is this on the compression stroke? Like others have said. Is it out 180 degrees?

Did someone advance the chain -5 or 5 degrees? Do you have pics of how the chain was set up?

Tdc #1 on compression stroke and then check rocker arms to see if valves are shut. Drop your distributor in having rotor point to #1

Are you sure which side of car is #1

Yea disconnected the vacuum advance line to the distributor. Everything is lined up accordingly with #1 on the compression stroke. The guy who built the engine will be coming over soon and he said he can get it started. He must know somthing I don't cause I've checked everything. Currently I crank it over and every rotation it seems to sputter like it's about to start, like a rhythmic brum brum brum. I'll wait for that dude to come over cause I don't wanna flood the *****.

Just ordered a ignition conversion kit cause im tired of dealing with the damn points and condenser.

Timing chain

Do a compression test vs compression ratio

Just wondering if you did the chain correctly

You need to test the dwell of the points. They are super simple to adjust

Can he use the same dwell meter he uses on his '03 Marauder?

If you set the point gap to .017, this should get you in the ball park for the dwell angle. The smaller the gap, the higher the dwell angle. Adjust the gap accordingly.

.014 is too close, make sure the condenser is new and the point contacts are clean. Do you have a ballast resistor? (reduces the 12 volts to 8 volts?
My Fairlane has a electronic ignition, however, I usually carry a set of points and condenser just in case it fails.
