Hey guys this is the first time I've posted on this site, hope I'm in the right spot. On my home earlier my car started hesitating and missing out of nowhere. No engine codes threw. Got home, let the car sit and then came back out to screw with it and the engine code finally threw p0174. I've looked the code up and I know what Google will give me and it's not enough to go on. Just curious if anyone has any knowledge they can drop on me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

could be vacuum leak, check vac lines for cracks, they get brittle over time. could be 02 sensor, coukd be dirty maf

Hey there I just had this problem last week. Codes read p0171 and p0174 took it to the dealership and the pcv tube was leaking. Small crack underneath the tube was causing the codes and too much air in the system. the part was 50bucks at ford. After the fix check engine light was cleared and she's running wel as of right now. Just my two cents. Good luck bud

Check the PVC tube for leaks. Seems to be a more common cause as of late as the cars age.

Anyone got a picture of where the PCV tube is (the leaky part)?

For me it was right where the hose hooks up to the upper intake area. The center section is a hard plastic or metal. The soft ends are where the problem seems to present itself. :)

You can't miss it, it's a very large house connected to the intake cover. PM me and I can walk you through it.

Is this correct (see picture)?

I had the same problem, when I installed the K&N CAI... This was what I did.

Was this just to reinforce the connection, like stress relief?

You got it, there was a small hole there and I improvised.

After figuring all this out, here's what I did (in case anyone else has this quirky setup on their MM).
Patient: 2003 MM, Kenny Brown Supercharged.
1. First problem: where's the PCV valve? Apparently it's on the back of the driver's side valve cover (see picture 1). The part I got from Napa wasn't anything like what I needed. Fortunately, I had one in the tool box and swapped it. I plugged the second tube, and then glued and heat shrunk the little plug over the tube to make sure it stayed (that's the blue tubing) (see picture 1a).
2. I couldn't figure out what was at the other end of the hose, since it had three hose clamps (see picture 2). After taking it apart, it was a brass sizing neck, changing the size of the small hose (from the PCV valve) to the larger size going into the intake.
3. So I used a larger hose to go into the intake (see picture 2a), and used the brass sizing neck to join the smaller hose from the PCV valve (see picture 2.b).
TBD: We'll see if it throws any more P0174 codes.
I'd be interested to learn if anyone else's intake looks like mine. The PCV valve that Napa thought I needed (see picture 3) (Motorcraft P/N EV257) fits nowhere on my car. The Deutsch part (see picture 4) did.

I may have spoken too soon. I have another PCV valve on the passenger side, front of the valve cover (nearest the radiator). In that one, the Motorcraft part fits. So I've now changed both, and put on new hoses and related hardware. I have a pending code in the computer (P0174), so am mystified as to what's causing it.
Anyone have ideas?

I've just had the code just pop up. I'm going to check that PVC hose first. I thought the car sounded a little different but haven't noticed any other issues.

Just went tru this, culprit was K&N discharge at throttle body intake , both clamps loose and probably sucking air and all not going thru MAF. tightened clamps cleared code, cleaned MAF and all good.
hope it helps

I switched to JLT about a year ago. Did take a quick look this morning but didn't see anything obviously loose. But I'll take a closer look later. I did clear the code to see if it comes back.

I cleared the code and the Check Engine Light has not come on again yet. I drove about 60 miles. Let the car idle in the parking lot at work today and idle sounds slightly not as smooth as usual but ok. Maybe need to clean the idle air motor or something. I opened the hood to feel and visually inspect the PVC and the hoses and the connecter to the Mass air flow sensor. Everything seemed fine and secure.
As I got back in the car, the car died. Started car and it runs normally again so probably a fluke. Did check for more codes but got P1000 which I think the means the car hasn't been driven enough yet to finish its tests.

OK, the check engine light came back on. Same P0174 but also now showing P0171. Which I believe is too lean bank 1. P1000 hasn't gone away yet but I assume that will go away once enough miles are on the car.
Can hear that the idle is not quite normal.

Check the large hose that enters the upper intake on the right side.

OK. I see the tear now in the big vacuum line near the intake on the passenger side. That has to be the problem.

Do my eyes deceive me, or does that vacuum line somehow attach to the other two smaller vacuum lines? Or is that somekind of other piece that I wouldn't have to replace?

The picture doesn't quite do it justice, but the tear is more in the shaded part continuing along the side.

Unless I got the wrong code as 0194--
Believe had same code/problem and if so it was the fuel rail sensor--replaced- all good--
Update---my bad --it was 0194 not 0174--carry on...

That’s the one I was referring to. A piece of heater hose and two zip ties and be done.

Any updates?
I am currently having the p0174 code, the symptom is rough idle at red lights and it feels like misfires, the engine died one time, when I take off it accelerates rough and then whe it hits somewhere from 25_30 mph it starts accelerating normally no lag. As I am reading I have noticed the the hose in the driver side valve is super loose and old, same for the hose in the passenger side from the valve to the top of the intake.
I checked rockauto hopping to find those hoses but no luck, does someone knows where to find them or have a part number? Tia

Definitely sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Here is the PCV valve hose 5W7Z-6758-BA. Look under air intake on Tasca Parts for the other hose you need.

I did a few things and found out that you phone becomes black listed and your phone # too, so to get the fb app and messenger again you need to change your device and phone #. Mhe I'm a 90s kid I can live with no fb. I use fb here and there but I have to access it thru an internet browser which it sucks, is not the same as using the app

I just noticed you’re near Ohare? I’m in Wheaton, small world. Yeah, being born in ‘73 I would have very little issue adjusting to an entire internet collapse. In fact most of it needs to go away..

Born in the 86 here, not sure if I shall say I'm an 80s kid or a 90s kid. So you're in Wheaton, probably the best suburb in IL, I actually move closer there after my separation, I'm in Addison now so we're even closer. Hope one day I can get to see your car with that huge list on your sig its kind of intimidating to see.

Swapped out the COPs, changed the crank sensor still had the miss. I put a bottle of Techron concentrate in a half tank of gas and drove it for a half an hour and the injector cleared.

Looking forward man, but just a heads up you'll be disappointed on my crapbox .
So since today is super nice outside I went and check on the hoses both sides, I cleaned them and inspected them and blew on them blocking the other end to see if they were leaking but no, both hoses are OK, they look bad though but they don't leak, then I removed the PCV valve and cleaned it too, I blew on it and noticed the air went fluently both ways which thats not how it should be I think, so I went to vatozone and got me a pcv valve and blew on it too and it actually the air flow is more restricted thru one side. I just installed it but haven't drive the car yet, driving tonight to see the gf I hope it fixes it. Still I am ordering the drivers side hose either way because it looks real bad.

Before I replaced that hose my idle would run fast intermittently. Did you have to heat the hose to remove the PCV valve?

No I didn't, with the pcv in place I pulled real hard and twits clockwise at the same time until the elbow snapped off. I used gloves and a rag to increase grip.
So I drove the car it didnt idle as rough now but it still idles kinda low at red lights, but for sure it's 75% better now.
I currently have new plugs and coils too, so I will replace the fuel filter, air filter and will put some injector cleaner too hoping to get it back to idle normally like before.

Update,
So after replacing the PCV the car idle much better but still was sort of acting up almost stalling at red lights and the car would go into lean mode for at take offs for a few seconds then it would go back to normal. As I was inspecting further it came to my mind of why the car would idle so low to the point that it would almost die, so I removed the idle control valve to inspected and it was extremely dirty and the thing inside didn't move so much so while I was playing with it with a screw driver trying to open the valve as open possible I broke a piece of the thing inside, meaning that it will now stay open all the time, at this moment I was like, well now I will know that its definitely not closing and it will allow air in all the time. When I put it back I drove the car and it just stopped going to lean mode and it didn't want to die any more.
A new idle motor is on the way.
