View Full Version : How do I make the seat like new?
Motorhead350

My driver seat feels no where near as nice as my passenger seat. I had a new pad installed years ago, but hardly noticed a difference.
What is required to make this feel like new again?
Thanks!

Expertise. Take it to a car upholstery shop.

one of the top shops here told me to put conditioner on the seats a few days in a row - seemed to work for me. Made a big difference in how they felt and looked.

I'd try a barbecue grille scraper. Those work for everything.

I had both front seats redone when I got the car. The problem is that the foam separates & breaks then seeps into the springs in the seat. No need to discard it, repair it with glue and add a firm material on top of the springs (under the foam) so the foam doesn't seep thru the springs anymore....yes, have an upholstery place do it.

I didn't post to ask where to take it, I asked how to do it.
Conditioner is step one.
Thank you.

Take My advice, Your new pad did the same thing, You didn't reinforce it. My seats were redone over a year ago and daily used. They feel perfect.

Uh oh, headed same place as the peg thread.
You didn't specify what was bothering you about the seats. I made an assumption, so did others.

I get your desire to be self reliant. However based on what I've seen of your ability to properly repair things, take it to a professional. You may get away with taking the seat apart, but I doubt that you could get it back together and looking nice. Upholstery is tricky and takes a level of experience to get it right.

Interesting info, does this also lead to squeaking springs?

not that squeaking springs are always a bad thing. They could actually be a sign of very good things.

I highly doubt anyone here has attempted to redo their seats themself, that's why no response to your liking. Either strip the cover off and see what's there and then go to an auto upholstery shop and buy the dense foam and do it yourself as you see fit. Just because you want to do it yourself does not mean we all want to do it ourself.

Yes. If you asked for a Phil Spector collection and were directed to an Ozzy Ozborne box set, you'd have the same reaction.

Oh and Dom, have at it. Even I wouldn't attempt to fix the foam. That's a talent few have.

I actually had to take apart half of the seat and transfer foam when I put in a new seat bracket. It's not that bad of a job. I can do this easier than making a turbo kit. As of now, my best bet is to buy new foam and check how worn out my springs are to determine if they need replacing. I can always grab one from a yard with a better spring, but there is no promise all of the electric motors will function. When I grab seats, I go for passengers seats if transferable due to the fact they will have less usage, especially on commercial vehciles.
Thanks for the advice from the few that helped.

Jeez, just take the car to a shop that specializes in automotive upholstery and tell them what you want. May be expensive, but after all you got the car for free.

Have a good upholstery mechanic rebuild it like I did (https://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=91601). I hope you weren't asking for how to do it for 0$, I am not aware of how that can be done. Even if you have illusions of doing it yourself, read the thread. There are some important details in there.

What is it that you want to fix? The foam or the leather? If the leather, I recommend you to use lexon leather conditioner or other expensive conditioner with no cleaner, because some are two in one. First clean the leather, then spray it with the conditioner, make sure you cover it all, let it soak for an hour. Then with a microfiber rag clean and wax in wax out.
The leather is really hard to bring back to life. Be careful of what type of products you use. Some people without knowing use armor all in leather, that thing toasts the leather cracking it.

Now, for the foam. Get a seat from the newest p71 at the yard and swap it, shouldn't be that hard. Or maybe a town car since they have bucket seats too

It all wears out, foam crushes and cuts into the wire hammock support, springs sag, sometimes the frame breaks. These are old cars, no magic spritz to spray on it and make the seat new.

Dom, what you need is a new seat frame. I went thru this on my 07. Some of our seats left the factory with spring bottoms, which are more sturdy. Some left the factory with elastic bottoms, which after time sag and get outstretched.
Junkyard time. New seat frame and cushion.

A junkyard seat is not new. Our seat hammocks are tension springs and wires, Marauders are '03 to '04, not '07.

Yup I figured a new seat frame would be the case.

over time, the springs ans wires break, at least thats what happened on my 03 marquis and 08 f450. and im only 200lbs lol

And that is why you buy new springs, install new wires, new high-density foam, and stretch a heavy canvas membrane over the wire hammock.
Good upholstery mechanics know all this. Had it done on my Marauder (see link above). It was a huge improvement, but it cost more than $8.

You used the dirty word, new. There's nothing that Motörhead does to his car that includes anything new.
He also doesn't like advice from those that actually know how things work.

I've got about 50 quarts of used oil in my garage. I'm too lazy to take it to be recycled. Some of it has less than 3000 miles on it. Free to a good home.
