View Full Version : Stickiest and widest tire before going full drag radials

Just wondering as id like to replace my rear tires with something I can get some traction with at the track as well. Not really worried about how fast they may wear out. I've put 34k miles on my car in 7 years.

Also, the widest tire that will fit my widened wheels. I'm running 295's now, but thought I read where 305's in a certain brand would work without modifying anything. Thanks for the help.

I'm using tapatalk and the search doesn't seem to be working properly

These are Drag radials though, 6/32" tread, 2/32" tread is legal minimum. Yes, wider and stickier..Stay out of the rain

I never drive my car when it's raining. Only when it's nice out, simply because I hate washing it sometimes. Wash it once, dry it twice. Black cars...

So, no rubbing on the inside huh? At my power level and the stall, I'm guessing these will hook pretty good at the drag strip? My mustang would roast them (NA 347).

How about a pic.

Also, will I need the 3/8" spacer as mentioned above? I want to order these today. I need them by Friday installed. Got a date with a Challenger scat pack at the track.

I'm good with the Nittos and 305's if they will work. I know I can squeeze a few miles out of them as well. What size on the Mickey Thompson's?

Would I have to upgrade the axles going either route? Im also in the market for a street/drag setup. Im having major issues getting the power to the ground.

I run the Nitto 305's sometimes. They fit without any other mods and without spacers IF you have the aftermarket shocks. Otherwise they will rub the shocks (actually the dust covers).

The specialists at Mos(Mart and Jeff) gave me the solution for the rubbing on stock shocks. These guys are the greatest. Ordering my Nittos today.

Have you ever used these at the drag strip?

I guess that it varies from Marauder to Marauder...but my Nitto P305 DRs on widened rims never rubbed on the shocks.
They hooked at the drag strip!
No spinning and a 1.795 60 foot.

They did suck azz in the rain.

Was that with or without a stall, or in the 6 speed? I've never had an automatic car I ran at the strip. Always a manual.

No stall. 456/431 11.7#s 3.55 gear.

0ff idle - consistent 12.15's with 1.75 60'

1,200-2,000 rpms 12.5's all day long with 1.80-1.82 60' IIRC

Zero tire spin. All cars, tunes, track conditions vary, best off to just try it all. Now with my F1, Procharger recommends no less than 3,500 RPM to keep it from bogging down. I haven't had the chance to see it shine.

I just noticed you have a centri. You definitely want to load it up. Just play around with it gradually increasing the RPMs. D1's wake up pretty quick but far from instant boost roots blowers. I would definitely go with a line lock if don't have it already.

Going to the track tonight. Plan on running the tires at 23 psi. Probably heat them up until the start smoking and see what happens. Going to loading it up to 3000 rpm then WOT at the light and hope it doesn't spin too much or at all

Remember if there is a weak link in your drivetrain you will find it at the track provided you hook up.

I know. It's all a part of it.

At 64k miles and never been stressed, if hope nothing like the axles failed. Seems I remember this conversation when I was looking at new mods and someone told me I would be ok as far as axles at this power level. Can't remember who said that

What tires were you using? If they're the Mickeys, you shouldn't have had any problems sticking. How much of a burnout did you do?

I ran a 12.59 in this video on 305-45-18 MT ET Street IIs. Temp was low 50s I believe. Trilogy, 440hp, 400tq., 4.10s, 3000 stall converter.
I'll have to find the time slip for the full info.

Yes, you have to melt the tires. If your rear bumper sides and wheel wells are not filled with rubber, you did not heat up enough, in my opinion. I roll the MT (E/T Street radials 305/45R18) until I see the smoke creep up to the drivers window. Then I know I'm good. I run 26 psi and see that the tire does indeed spin a bit on the rim at that pressure. Lower pressure would be more spin on the rim.

I am not going to drill holes in my marauder wheels to eliminate that, so I keep the psi a bit higher. Make a mark on the rim and on the tire that line up. Go get some traction and see how much the tire spins in the rim. My marks were about 3" off after one run with good track prep and good hook-up. 1.84 60 foot, which could be better if I can load up a bit, which I can't. Stock converter only allows about 2,300 RMP before it creeps or breaks traction, depending on how sticky the tires are. I launched at 2,000 a few times, but always go up in smoke. No more than 1,000 R's and I'm good, if the track is well prepped and the tires are glue.

I am at 440 RWH, 31 spline Detroit TruTrac on FORD axles and 4.10:1 rears. My tires DO rub ever so slightly on my upper shock tubes. I will not run spacers. I think I can put a spacer on the lower shock mount to bring them inward enough. As soon as I repair my other cars from our brutal North East winters, I will get right on it......

I am a big believer in the fact we are moving a bunch of weight off a standing start. Puts a lot of parts under a lot of stress. Something has to give. A little tire spin saves parts that have not been beefed up.

MT 3786R P305/45R18 ET Street Radial on OEM Wheels Widened 1.5".
First Pass usually 20psi depending on weather and track conditions.
Side mirrors aimed down to view fender wells.
Back up into the water box.
Pull out of the water box.
Stand on brake pedal. Jam throttle down.
Look in side view mirrors and let up on throttle when both fender wells filled with smoke.
Slowly let up for 10'.
Stage shallow.
Raise RPMs to 2,500+.

14.5psi to 19psi.

My 60' range from 1.6 to 1.8.

Please post your tire brand, model, size, wheel size, psi and 60'.
