View Full Version : I think my not too old Fuel Pump is crapping out

Drive the car all weekend with no issues. Got in it yesterday and drove it 4 miles to my mom's house, no issues. Parked on a hill facing downward. Was there about an hour. Started car and it appeared to be running funny, kinda like skipping. No CEL. Got to the bottom of the hill, and my wideband is showing lean and it's barely running. Came to a stop and it cut off. Had a hard time getting it to start, and finally held the throttle down and for it running. Still running rough and showing lean on the WB. Crept it home and parked it.

Start it this morning and it seems to be running normal. Didn't drive it and shut if off after about 30 seconds of idling. I'm waiting on my odbII scan tool to come in so I can look at the fuel pump to see what it's doing. Can't remember exactly when I put the pump in, but it doesn't have many miles on it.

How old is your fuel filter?

It could be a few years old. I upgraded to the larger filter either after or before I supercharged it

Jan. 2015 is when it was replaced. Approx 14k miles

Could the fuel pick-up sock have fallen off the pump in your tank? Or maybe the in-tank hose rotted? Did you use the right fuel-resistant hose when you installed the new pump? Clamps tightened? or reused original hose and it has split/cracked?

You have to pull pump from tank to check those ideas, is a pita. I'd replace fuel filter first just because its cheap and easy to get to, even though its not old enough to be likely culprit.

I can explore those things, but the splitting hose happened last time with the Aeromotive pump. I bout new hose that shouldn't be splitting.

I've been trying to find out what filter I have from musclemercs upgrade kit so I can pick one up and swap it out in one shot. I hate having to stop and run to the parts store. It's not so close

Go in the tank and see what's up. I've had an aem pump fail on me once. The giveaway was a relay that was so hot I could not touch it

I haven't pulled the pump, but it appears the problem lies there. Checked the fuel pressure and it's mighty low. Car will start up fine on first attempt. Let it idle for a while and I have to push the throttle for it to start back up. Wait a while, turn switch on, psi is back up at 40, then car will start just fine. I'm sure tired of fuel pump issues. First the Aeromotive 340, now the AEM 320. What's next? At least the Aeromotive held up for a few years.

Sounds like mine when the FPDM got overheated.

I have a modified fpdm. Easier to try swapping the stock back in before pulling the pump.

Just thinking. I've used Walbro pumps for years with no issues. Hmmm...

Recommend me a fuel pump. I've tried the Aeromotive and the AEM. It looks like the pump is the issue. I swapped the fuel pressure regulated and the fpdm and the pressure is still low.

Just out of curiosity, do these pumps have a "sock" filter on them? Back in my pre MM days the car I had there would be fuel issues if the sock collapsed from not staying in the fuel, like being on a hill... We discovered we had to never to below 1/4 tabk to keep this from happening. Just a thought.

I typically run 98-02 socks which are considerably smaller to easily fit two pumps and never once an issue of fuel starvation.

The 3/8" hose that comes with these pumps doesn't fit snug on the 5/16" pump outlet. A little trick I learned from Zack to fill the gap between the two is to shave off the outer half of a 5/16" fuel hose and cut it 1/2" long to put over the nipple first, then the 3/8" hose. And of course to only use fuel injection clamps and NOT the worm clamps the pump manufacturers supply.

This has worked like a charm for years.

Or maybe you've just had bad luck on pumps?

My original single Aeromotive 340 has lasted me about four years now and purrs. When I added a second one two years ago it sounded like it had sand in the bearings but still performs flawless and the sound never got better or worse. Just goes to show they aren't all equal.

One last thing to swap before you open the tank is the relay. It might be getting to the point of complete failure by not quite letting all the current thru. You could also monitor your fuel pump voltage before and after swapping relays but keep in mind the voltage is a constantly cycling roller coaster.

But if your voltage is staying high and your duty cycle is maxing out then it's definitely time to open the tank.

Just some quick and simple diagnostics you can check before getting dirty is all. [emoji1303]

The more I think about it, it probably is the pump. I noticed when it primes it's pretty loud compared to when it was new. It was pretty quiet.

having the same issue with my 340, except my FPDM was fried, i'm giving aem a try because of the price.
