View Full Version : Trans doesn't always engage.

When i go to back out of my driveway, I've noticed I have to "feel" for the trans to find the right spot on my shifter to get it to go into reverse.
If I just put it on R without finding that perfect spot, it'll roll backwards like it is in neutral.
I love these cars but I'm still learning about how to fix them. Any ideas on what is wrong?
The check engine light is also sporadically on, but I don't think it is related. (Vacuum?)
Thanks guys.

shift cable needs adjustment, can be done fairly easily underneath the car on the drivers side of trans. You will see a big nut holding the cable on. remove and slide left or ride to get it how you want. Might want a helper, you dont want to run yourself over

i've always wondered why mine does this. Not always, but occasionally. Thanks

The check engine light is also sporadically on,The next time it comes on, go to almost any national chain parts store and they will read the code(s) for free.

If I were you I would look at the range selector/ neutral safety switch, its black module on the driver's side of the transmission. There are videos on YouTube that show how to adjust it.
