View Full Version : Auto meter gauge

My auto meter oil pressure gauge started acting flaky yesterday. I have the real gauge not the factory display. It is very consistently showing pressure only above 2000 rpm. As soon as the RPM dip below 1800 it drops instantly to zero as if it were unplugged. It is not my oil pressure dropping. It is more like a loose connection with immediate jump from zero to 50 and from 50 to zero. Faulty gauge or faulty sending unit? Anyone experience this before?

Probably the sender. I'd check the connections first................

Connection then send.

The senders are known to fail.

Correct but it's usually a complete failure - no reading at all - like what happened to mine. Nothing like driving down the highway and all of a sudden the oil pressure is 0

Experienced the same issue tonight driving around town. I figured it to be an electric issue. Bad contact or the sending unit going out

Please forgive the terrible video quality.

Exactly. Not sure what your RPMs are reading but the gauge movement is identical.

Seems odd we would have the same loose connection.

After about a half dozen sending units I went with a mechanical gauge

I just took delivery of this gauge and haven't even opened it. I saw the thread and figured it would be easy. Hope I don't have sender issues and regret it.

Whatever POS sensor is in those things - it won't register anything below 50psi. That's why your needle drops until you hit the highway or are in a higher gear. Looks like I'm ordering a new sending unit this weekend I guess

Might as well order them in bulk, maybe you can get a discount. :)

Some folks have recommended remote mounting with a flexible hose to keep engine vibration from affecting the sending unit.

I'd like to see specs or someone who has that setup

This helps with materials but where would you mount it

Mechanical gauge probably is easier

That's one reason I went mechanical

Maybe that's why mine has never failed in the nine or so years I've had it? The last few being welded engine mounts.
