View Full Version : Lock button mod?

OK, I am growing weary of that lock button digging into my arm when I try to rest my arm on the window. It's nice out, and I like having the windows down and my arm resting up there, but the d**n button makes it near-unbearable.
Short of simply pulling the button off, is there a mod out there that some have done to flatten this button out? I'm not in search of decorative lock button covers, just something that gets rid of the annoying poke in the arm.
I mean, why the hell put them in the car anyway? The autolocks do all the work and it's not like if you ever locked your car out they would be of any use to you. Why are they there?
Thanks for any help,

The button is plastic on a metal threaded rod and I turned it down to where it does not stick up above the door when in the locked position. You could unsrew and remove it entirely and not see it at all I suppose....

You are correct, I am only did this to be flush in the locked position and above in unlocked.
Any lower and you would hae to remove the door panel to get it unstuck :mad2:

OH MY GOD--THAT'S BEEN BUGGIN' THE CRAP OUTTA ME TOO!!! So I've been driving for a year now with the plastic cap simply removed. I've been meaning to hacksaw the threaded post down so that the plastic cap would sit flush with the trim panel when locked. Heavy 351--any idea how much you had to grind off of the threaded post so that when screwed back on, the plastic cap remained flush with the trim panel? Thanks!

Silly me -
And I was just gonna take a hammer to it and stop when it was flush.
Did I mention I'm not the most mechanically minded?

Lock the door. Mark it with a writing stick. Remove everything up to a small fraction above the line . . . QED ;)
Buy a few extra interior door panels.
Cut the top section off of each one.
Glue those top sections to the top of your door panel until it is high enough to cover the button.
Done! Just like that.
Dan has spoken.

Better yet take a magic marker , wearing a short sleeve shirt mark on your arm where the knob contacts you. drill a small hole right on the mark!!
That idea was good but mine is better. His arm would need to be redrilled every few days. My fix is permanent. :P

not much, maybe less than a 1/4" just be careful not to trash the threads too bad..
