View Full Version : Brake Rotor Runout Testing?

Anyone check for this when installing new or turned rotors? Just curious. I have a dial indicator, but can't find a way to mount it on the mounted rotor. I'll see if I can fabricate something to keep it constant.
(If I did have excessive runout, I wouldn't try to shim, I'd just turn the rotor a couple of lugs and try again.)
If I can't double check for it, with new rotors I'll content myself with cleaning the hub thoroughly of any rust, and go with that. Thanks.

I don't remember ever hearing of any problems with run out.
I'd use some anti-seize on the hub. Will make disassembly easier down the road.

Didn't think of that. Good idea, thanks.

Well a runout gauge usually has a magnet or vise-grip on a snake thing, you can attach this to the caliper bracket or the tie rod end. I had an issue on one of my panther that had a slightly bent hub, which when I put new rotors on caused a couple thousandths runout on the rotor. I simply did an on-car machine to correct for it, as re-indexing as you are thinking about doing would not correct for a slightly bent hub, but would work if you had a warped rotor out of the box - however if this is the case I would return the rotor and ask for a different brand.
