View Full Version : No Time for Project Car: Thinking About Selling

As thread title states, I bought a MM project car but now it is apparent that I have too many other things on my plate and will probably never get around to giving it the attention it needs. Putting out a feeler for interest. I have about $2k invested. It needs work, but the body and interior are in pretty good condition. I'l get some pics this weekend and post them along with a more detailed list of problems I have found. Lots of little things, a few biggies (engine trouble). When it went up for sale before, there was talk of parting it out, so I bought it to save its life.

This is the one from Virginia I was interested in. I'm still interested. Will it still run long enough to load on a trailer?

Yes. I have moved it in my driveway a little bit. At first I thought it had spun a rod bearing, but now I'm not so sure. It could be a valve train problem. It won't hardly rev up, feels like something is holding it back. It had a totally wrong oil filter when I got it, it didn't have the anti-drainback valve. I changed to a FL-820S and it doesn't make so much noise on startup. It does have a repetitive noise, maybe a follower or lifter problem or jumped time.

I'd definitely be interested in it. Especially if it's rust free.

It is rust free. Obviously there is some interest, I've had several PMs. Especially about parting it out. NO, I am not going to part it out. This is a solid car, VERY fixable. This weekend I will get some pics and a more detailed description of the good and bad.

What's the miles, and when's a good time to call you? My only hold up on this is trying to justify another vehicle in the yard. I'm with you on this car it needs to be saved.

It's at the other house (in Lenoir City), I won't be down there until the weekend to check out the details. I believe it was in the mid-100k range.

Got some pics and details.
Not too bad from a distance, paint isn't faded, clearcoat isn't peeling.

Look a bit closer...
oops, some kind of error message about a security token

Rear bumper cover needs minor repair and repaint.
There are a couple of holes in the middle, I believe the previous owner said somebody backed into it with a trailer hitch. There are a couple of small holes on the left side, it looks like the rear bumper inner supports caused them. Both places have been painted with a rattle can.

Headlights are yellowed, drivers side marker seems to have the black paint faded on the inside. Passengers side foglite is busted.

Front bumper cover paint is cracked and there are scuff marks where the busted fog lite is located. Grille has a crack, looks like it is fixable with a little glue. It has the license plate bracket on it, but I think it has minor damage also.

A couple of wheels are messed up, one has curbing damage and the other has clearcoat peelint. All of the center caps are intact. The tires are Firestone, same size all around. The fronts are totally worn out, the rears have a little life left. IF I were going to fix it for resale, I would get a couple of used Firestones in the larger size for the stagger and put them on the rear, rotating the current rear ones to the front.

Inside the trunk, it does have the cd changer. The mini-spare looks ok and it has the cover for it. The jack bag appears to be gone.

The interior good: the seat cover doesn't have the commonly seen hole worn in it at the hinge, and it does have heated seats

The interior bad: It needs a console lid and bucket, the coin holder is totally busted out of the bucket and it is broken next to the hinge. The shifter dust cover is broken.

The engine looks to be complete and unmolested. That's maybe good, maybe not. The noise it makes could be a rod bearing or it could be a lifter/follower. The fact it won't rev up properly leads me to believe it is timing related. The previous owner said he had the cam chain tensioners replaced with the metal ones. So did they get replaced and timing not get set properly in the process? or did they not get replaced at all? The engine doesn't really look like it has been disassembled... I do know a totally wrong oil filter was on it when I got it, so maybe it lost oil pressure and jumped time or spun a bearing?

I think that's about it. Full disclosure... It has a lot of little things wrong, but it has a solid body and the engine doesn't have a hole in the block. Lots of potential.

My thoughts exactly. I see people fixing up a whole lot worse. Maybe I've even done it myself after getting rear-ended...

Not only will I not be parting it out, I won't even sell the whole car to somebody I believe is going to turn around and part it out.
