Replaced the AC line as shown, hear a hissing now from withing that plastic insulated box, clearly the refrigerant is leaking out from the part inside. My brother in law is in heating and air, says that's my evaporator coil and the dash must be removed. I call Ford and parts says that's my accumulator, it's prone to rusting and can be replaced from the engine bay without dash removal. I want to buy the part on Rock Auto and replace it myself or with help, but not if the dash has to come out. So what is it and how is it done?

If it's the evaporator then the dash has to come out.

If it's the receiver dryer / accumulator then it can be done since it's easily accessible under the hood.

Either way you'll need to evacuate the system, check the oil and recharge it.

That's the evaporator.

If replacing it, I'd suggest doing all the other o-rings, receiver dryer, orifice tube and the BCM (if you haven't already).

I'd have someone verify your diagnosis.

That is the evaporator, and although it is visible from the engine bay, the dash board must come out for replacement?

I think some of the bolts for the housing are on the other side of the firewall.

In short...no

The evaporator is removed from the engine bay by removing the outboard portion of the a/c case..

Wait. Everyone has been saying that the dash has to be removed, and Ford quoted a huge labor bill to do the job, so how can it be done from the engine bay? Any help, tips, pics, links to videos would be hugely appreciated!

That cover can be removed without removing dashboard. At least on my Aero. MM should be similar.

The cover looks like it might come off, but from there, can the evaporator be removed? Also, what's an Aero?

Aero is a 92-97 crown vic/marquis body style

Thanks, the tips on there sound helpful, I wish all the embedded links weren't broken though!

Took the advise given. Ordered the evaporator, as well as the O Rings, orifice tube and dryer. Going to attempt to do it through the engine bay/wheel well on Thursday. I'll document how it goes in a new thread. Wish me luck!
