View Full Version : Thinking of rebuilding my transmission

I've had an issue with it that was only discovered while I was at the drag strip while WOT and after installing the stall. Ran this issue thru some knowledgeable people and they think it's slippage between 2-3 ( only during WOT). Driving around normal and a little above normal it's fine.
This has led me to do some reading. I ran across this article
http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/drivetrain/1611-how-to-build-a-fiercely-reliable-aod-e4r70w-transmission/
and now I'm wondering about this TCI rebuild kit mentioned in the article. Anyone here used this kit? If this kit is really good, what does it allow that a normal rebuild with OEM parts wouldn't. Just as info. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I mistakenly said 3-4, but meant 2-3 shift. I was sleepy and tired. My mistake

with a power adder, I would never rebuild a transmission with stock components. if you are rebuilding it, put the beefy parts in for strength etc...

You really should NOT be doing 3-4 upshifts at WOT... especially if you have a power adder.
OD/4th gear on this transmission happens when the OD band is applied and stops the reverse drum from spinning. in order for that to happen, the forward clutch has to disengage and the OD band has to apply and that 2" band has to stop the entire front half of the transmission from spinning. while all this going on, the only clutch that is applied (and moving the car forward) is the Direct clutch, which is the smallest clutch pack in the entire transmission.
in non technical terms ... you are cooking your transmission.

consequently, the TCI kit is junk. The OEM spec Raysbestos frictions are the best and its all I use. The article you linked is pretty old too, your 2003 transmission already has factory updates in it, which make it stronger than the parts listed in the article.

Sorry, as you can see in the video, it's the shifts between 2nd and 3rd

Applying OD @ WOT is an excellent way to cook the Trans and empty your wallet. I have the repair bills to prove it......

I don't have a parts list, i'm not a trans.man...pretty much everyone in here who has 500 ponies and up has a better trans than stock, whether built with better parts or a whole new trans.

Get the hardened direct drum from Freddie Brown or else the hardened stub shaft will destroy it. Some on here say it is not necessary. I have proof that is bends the splines in the drum if you are putting down serious power. It will fail eventually. No doubt about it.

Exedy has a nice friction kit. Its what we use. A billet/hardened stub is important as well. Good luck with your build.

Fred installed a hardened input shaft and a new hardened direct drum.

I broke the teflon seal on my pump. When they tore the trans down they found the hardened stub shaft was twisting the drum. Finally found a hardened one through FB.

I responded to your PM about the rebuild. If you want me to rebuild it, I already have most of the upgraded hard parts needed and I will order the rebuild kit from my supplier. The hardened direct drum is the only part I dont have and would have to special order.
