We sell that at my store. I have issues with a change-it-and-forget-it-all-year oil change. Especially in 14 year-old aluminum DOHC engines. I try to educate my customers on forgetting the antiquated 3K oil change. 5000 is my interval in my '06 Taurus and a Motorcraft filter. The Merc gets it once a year (3000 miles).

I see many new imports that can go a year with 10K intervals. I've seen 7500 on a Prius that came out clean. My advice is don't pinch pennies on tires or oil. And don't use Pennzoil.

Bet the directions tell a different story depending on vehicle use.

Did a little research on this. The directions say:

"Proven protection for 1 full year*
*Or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Introducing the once-a-year oil change. New Mobil 1 Annual Protection ultimate full synthetic motor oils feature breakthrough lubricant technology that provides protection for one year between oil changes or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first – guaranteed.†

We recommend using a Mobil 1™ Extended Performance Oil Filter along with the new Mobil 1 Annual Protection synthetic oil. Though not required, these filters meet the requirements of the Mobil 1 Annual Protection limited warranty and are perfect companion products for longer-lasting protection.

Available in 0W-20, 5W-20 and 5W-30 viscosities, Mobil 1 Annual Protection oils are recommended for all types of modern vehicles, including high-performance, turbocharged, supercharged, multi-valve and fuel-injected engines that are found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks.

Please reference our Mobil 1™ Product Guide for a quick look at specifications including zinc and phosphorus, as well as manufacturer approvals for Mobil 1 motor oils.

We stand behind our products. Read our Mobil 1 Annual Protection limited warranty.

*Or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.
†Please follow the recommendations in your owner's manual while your car is under warranty."

It seems a bit misleading. They offer an oil and filter with annual protection, however they want you to "Please follow the recommendations in your owner's manual while your car is under warranty." I would never advise someone to go 20,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first before an oil change. Even if they are using this oil and the "Mobil 1™ Extended Performance Oil Filter." If you go on the website and enter 2003 Mercury Marauder, this is the recommended oil and filter (including the annual protection option):

Including the oil filter with an annual protection guarantee:

If anyone wants a longer time between oil changes, here's one idea.
Don't know how realistic it is:

Call me old fashioned, call me a pain in the ass, just don't call me shirley!

I use full synthetic (Mobil 1) in all of the modified cars. I use a synthetic blend in the daily drivers. I change them all at either 3,000 miles, or 6 months.
The modified cars are raced, have oil coolers with large oil pans, and except the Marauder, all have superchargers. They need very clean oil.

The daily drivers get less than 3,000 miles per year. So the 6 months works for them fine. Any long vacation is taken via an airline.

When I take apart the racing engines for inspection, they show no signs of wear. That is why I use full synthetic and change is often. Oil is cheaper than engines!
