View Full Version : Look at this Hackery. Wtf
Worked on CJ's car. He brought it complaining of an oil leak. That guy in Atlanta (not Marty) left all of the metal inserts out. All 20. Unbelievable HACK.
The belt tensioner literally sits on the balancer. The blower is out of alignment causing belt fraying and a horrible squeak.
No need for radiator mounts either.
I bet he wears Velcro shoes. Unbelievable. Plus he deleted the EVAP system. Over the past year I have seen incompetence across the spectrum of jobs from people I have done business with who up to this point were excellent.
I have discussed it with several others who have come up with various reasons.
Regardless I find this all very disturbing.
I hope everything works out for CJ.

This is why I hate to let anyone touch my car and I'm in the process of teaching myself how to tig weld to finish my COT.
This is why I hate to let anyone touch my car and I'm in the process of teaching myself how to tig weld to finish my COT.
Welding the COT is easy. The brazing material around the bungs is what f's them up. When you weld, the brazing material liquifies and messes everything up. You have to weld 1/2" at a time then let it cool down around those areas

I'm not a mechanic, but know hack work when I see it.
I had to spend 3 hours fixing everything from loose screws in the steering wheel cover to loose wires under the hood, non-shrink wrapped connectors, a non-working siren, to shredded door sills (from the guy laying across them with tools in his belt), and scratched instrument panel plastic (from the guy laying his tools up there), after I paid $600 for an alarm to be installed. "Jest good enuf," was this guy's motto.
My favorite was the guy who climbed into my '70 Plymouth I was restoring, with new upholstery, with a 12" screwdriver in his hip pocket. Didn't say anything, I found it later and he denied it.
Most people just don't give a $)&t. Which is why I hate taking my car to anyone, especially the dealer.

Last time I went to the Dealer;
"I brought my 2003 Mercury Marauder in for service on 2/22/2016, see attached. A hood latch cable was replaced and I picked my Marauder up on 2/29/2016.
When I walked up to my Marauder I noticed the radiator cover clips were sticking out of the hood and on top of the grille frame. I opened the hood and correctly installed the radiator cover.
When I got to my house the following items needed fixing;
• the hood latch was not adjusted being off to one side and all the way down causing the hood to be misaligned and difficult to open
• there was a small scratch on the rear part of the drivers front fender
• the bolt holding the windshield washer tank was striped
• the interior trim piece around the hood release handle fell off
• the carpet was placed on top of a trim piece exposing a wiring harness.
I have been bringing my Marauder to your dealership for 7 years and up to this point have always been satisfied."
I found out he had fired all the senior techs and replaced them with idiots.

Welcome to the new norm. Just wait until the next generation comes. All of the true trade craftsmen are dying off and most of the new replacements learn just enough to get by, if that. But, they are still worth the big pay----just ask them. We locals have this conversation on a regular basis around here.
Out of a hundred repair shops in a 25 mile radius, there is only one guy I've found that I would trust to work on my car. He's sharp as a tack and so darn busy it takes months to get an appointment. There was one other but he just retired.
At my age, I would gladly pay someone to do an at least average job with above average pay if I could find them. I can't, so, I still do everything myself---just at a slower pace. These yawhoos around here can't even rotate tires correctly. I had one old guy at a tire place that did good work, but he went and died on me. I used to tip him big because I was so appreciative.
I still have to do all the plumbing install & repair, HVAC install & repair, electrical install & repair, framing, painting, appliance repair, auto repair & maintenance, lawn equipment repair, lawn care, etc. myself.
I just recently called five tree cutting businesses to get an estimate. Three never returned the call. One called and said he'd be up the next day----never showed and never heard from him again. Another called and said he'd be by the next day, then showed up unannounced a week later. He then gave me an insane price for what he said was a one-man, half-day job and said good luck on finding anyone else because he knew they don't show up and spoke poorly of them.
All it would take to be successful today in any business is: Answer the phone, show up when you say you will, be pleasant, half way know what you're doing and charge a reasonable price.
And, if I hear one more person tell me "You get what you pay for," I think I'll scream. If only that were a true statement. That would mean you've never overpaid for anything. Notice, only the person saying that is the one selling.
I hope wherever you other folks live you have better choices than we do here. If you find "The guy," hang on to 'em.

Here's the other side of the deal.... as a business owner the amount of rude, self entitled, demanding customers is unreal. Couple that with the fact that we can't get any parts that work or fit correctly the first time and you have a recipe for disaster. I could go on and on about the parts we get that are "built for" the car we are working on... yeah they don't fit. Recently I'm talking about a $1000 set of American Made headers that are not even close to welded together straight... get the second set... welded incorrectly again... oh, we don't get paid to do the job twice or three times and the first thing out of the mouth of the "customer service" agent is "we've never run into that before".... I hear this daily, meanwhile a vehicle sits for days and days on a hoist costing me a fortune...

My wife is so sick of me saying it, but I'll say it again: no one can do their damned job anymore. Almost everyone phones it in and can't be bothered. Meziere says their bearing will last 3000 hours, it lasts 1900; an average of 45,000 miles per rebuild on a $450 water pump. "Sorry 'bout that!" the happy dolt on the phone tells me. What, sorry you sell a crap product, or sorry you lied about its service life? Which is it punky?
The guy laying my patio puts 15 long bricks on one side, 10 on the other, 12 across the top, and 16 across the bottom. Me: "uh, the borders don't match." Him: "oh, no one will notice!" Me: "I noticed!"
The reason my rotor was warped and vibrating so bad was the tire shop put it on with an air ratchet at a min of 150 ft lbs. I didn't double check for once and it got me; I've found you have to double check everything.
I paid a guy to mow and fertilize my lawn, and he used a broadleaf weed killer that killed a 20 year old 30' tall birch tree in one season. Oopsy, sorry 'bout that!
My wife paid the department store $170 extra to have a new dishwasher installed; the tech slashed the front with a knife, left off the front fascia, used drywall instead of sheet metal screws, and butchered my molding. He was pissed when I called him the next day. It's "Gud 'enuf!"
Prices go up, quality goes down, and yes, some customers expect to pay Walmart prices for everything. I sure wouldn't want to be a retailer today dealing with the public, but there are enough customers out there that will pay for good work you would think you could find it more easily.
I go to my current mechanic because after he did electrical work on my car (I had a second freeway blaster horn wired in and the underbody lighting kit installed) I took it home and removed the access panel and looked underneath and checked everything. Perfectly heat shrunk connections, neat work, professionally done at a fair price, so he's got my business for life.
I don't know what I would do if someone hacked my MM like this, but I could dream about a smoking hole in the ground where their shop used to be. [emoji35][emoji15]

Unfortunately for the majority of people who work they would be better off financially sitting at home. And that is why I usually only complain when a person is rude. In this case it was obvious the Tech and the Owner did not give a sh$t.

In the past year it has gotten really bad. I have to call up experienced attys and ask them to read a section of the contract to me on the phone or to amend their filing because despite being told numerous times they referenced the wrong location.
Or the Drs Office asking 2 different companies to run the same test.
Or the accounting dept not understanding a credit balance means they send me money, I had to pull a favor and call the President of the company who I have known for 34 years and had no contact in 13 years. And then 2 months latter they tried to pay me the same credit balance a second time.
Or I call the office landlord to tell them one of our Ladies locked the keys in the womens room. They "computer code" it a Lockout and call a locksmith, because there is no other code. I tell them to forget it.
Happens once or twice a week.

You're so correct. One of the main reasons I got out of racing is because many of the name brand parts I'd buy were very poorly made.
I bought a TCI fully prepped trans that was supposed to have been dyno tested before they shipped it. Well, the pan gasket was missing and all the fluid poured right out and a rear shaft gear was completely missing. I called the factory and got a spanish speaking fellow who quickly told me: "We no care what you think, we sell many." After fixing those issues, the trans lasted 4 runs. I ate the cost of that one.
The last straw was ordering a complete Pypes exhaust from American Muscle for a street car and received a box with horribly beat up, banged up garbage with crudely bent pieces of concrete rebar welded to the mufflers and pipes for exhaust hangers. Same deal with calling the factory but AM did make it good for me.
This is our world now. I feel for my grandkids.

My preference is zero to minimal moderation and freedom to say pretty much what you like, as long as general respect is maintained. I never saw a problem here, even when we had more moderation. IMNSHO most lists are over moderated. As long as Zack isn't texting my wife with his "rub one off" suggestions, I'm good. [emoji16]
The sole issue I see with the kind of dynamic we have here is that we have three classes of posters:
1) The "senior" guys like you and justbob, FBM, RF, Zack, RCR, MartyO, and many others (not dissing anyone, all I could think of offhand), that are absolute experts and do this stuff for a living and could teach classes on it, and
2) A middle ground of guys who have done some work before and have decent tools and some mechanical knowledge but for example had never done a full brake job before, [emoji15], who can get bogged down in the details and ask a lot of dumbass questions ad nauseum taxing the long suffering patience of the guys in #1, and
3) A few newbies who are like the guy I worked with when I was a Service Writer for Chevron USA (corporate station) years ago, who put a quart of oil into the customers car by taking off the air cleaner and dumping it into the carburetor, or who left grease all over the rotors after a wheel bearing repack, so when the customer drove off, they kept going and going and going... [emoji79]. (My favorite was the new guy who put a brand new '79 Cadillac on the lift, left the drivers door open, then raised it up till the door hit the overhead steel tire rack and sheared off the car. Oops! "We changed your oil, and BTW your door is in your trunk."). [emoji15]
Sometimes those guys don't even know which questions to ask, let alone how to implement the answers they get.
The folks who have it the hardest are the guys in #1, because basically the rest of us are picking your brains for what you normally get paid for. But hopefully as folks get educated and try stuff themselves they can help out, at least I'm sure that's been happening over the years.
