View Full Version : Rear End Noise

I took my car in for maintenance and mentioned the "rear end clunk". The sound in my car can be reproduced 100% of the time, so my wrench heard it. I did not say anything about it, I wanted him to draw his own conclusions.

He came back to me and told me in detail that there is a problem reported on the rear right shock upper mount where the bushing does not correctly engage the upper shock mount (his words) the shock is on order and I will report on the results.

Since my noise can be reproduced at will, it will be very easy to know if problem is fixed....stay tuned.

I'm surprised this happened on an OE Tokico shock.

I don't know if the shock is to blame, but I guess we will find out.

How do you reproduce this problem 100% of the time? I'm interested in knowing...

make sure they replace BOTH rear shocks at the same time..., if that is determined to be the problem.

-chris Well, just went thru a shock absorber problem with my 03 P72 Panther. One shock leaked... I wanted a pair because for 45 years of driving I and everybody I know always bought and replaced shocks in pairs.. After 3 Ford dealers told me Ford would only give me one on warranty, I relented and had the one replaced by the best dealer of the lot.. I then called Ford Cust Serv and got no where..."The Dealer Knows Best". I am older and wiser re Fords than any of the techs... So I called the zone office and they referred me to the dealer... oh well...But Ford called the dealer and didn't tell me... Later I got a call from the "owner" of the Ford dealer asking me why I had called his zone rep.... I suggested that it was because his service people wouldn't give me two shocks on warranty and his answer was that Ford would only pay for one. He then berated me for calling the rep and said flat out that neither me or my Crown Vics would be welcome at his dealership ever again....But, I have found a much friendlier dealer and I still Love my Panthers... 4 at this time and about a million miles in them and their forebears in the last 20 years... It was MoPar 440s and 360s before then... Lesson learned: Shoes come in pairs and shocks come one at a time from Ford.. Dealers come and go, but good dealers go slower...

Steve, my car will make the noise "clunk" every single time I turn right from the street in to the lot where my car is serviced, there is a curve at the entrance that triggers the sound without fail, as a matter of fact, that is what reminded me to mention it.

I was simply taking the car in for the 15,000 mile service (oil and filter change, fuel filter replaced and fuel injectors cleaned) by the way I had the slightest little engine movement at idle in Park, after the injector cleaning my engine has no detectable movement at idle anymore. Javier.

Does reproducing the noise happen over completely level surfaces, or do you have to go up an incline or through a gutter or something to make it happen? I think the noises I still get from my car are body mounts, but I'm interested to see if what you're hearing might be similar to mine.

 Good lord. You're much more of a man than I am to be so cool about this. I would have been off the phone and down there in that guy's face 20 seconds later. They'd have had to call security to get me off their property. Seriously. What an arse to treat a customer like that!

It requires a right turn where you go from flat ground over a culvert or incline, it will not make the sound going straight and simply going over a pot hole.

Mine has always done this. Let me know if the shock fixes it!

So no noise doing the same with a left turn then?

Correct, left side never makes noise.

Correct, left side never makes noise.

Ok, I must not be experiencing the same thing, then. I think I've got squeeky body mounts. I'll definitely be interested in hearing how things go with your shock replacement, though.

and that guy is a Ford dealer?????

cyclopsram also said Ford Customer service said the "dealer knows best" which makes it sound like if the dealer said two need replacing then two would be replaced. Kind of contradicts what the dealer said about ford only paying for one.

Since the shock are essentially new still, replacing one might be OK, but normally it could be a safety issue.

All note: Ck. your rear ends prior to warranty ending.

Today I noticed moaning in the rear end as rolled at 25 to 60 mph.
Above that too much noise to hear. Thought it was a loose anti sway bar
again but indeed NOT.

There is a TSB (there is a thread on this ) on our rear ends.
Most FORD Dealers are very aware.
This talented Dealer, Walnut Creek Ford (lg.est Cobra & CV law enforcemant dealer in Calif.) was quick to test it this afternoon and yes new rear Axles & Bearings are on the way. Here tomorrow. Takes 5-7hrs. to install they said.
Also they said it happens often to CHP and Police cars.

They ordered a kit to fix it.
Detail reads---28887 SSM 03-5-5 on Oasis covers rear axle bearings and axle prematuer wear.

Glad I found it before the warranty was over!

I know this thread was from 3 years ago, but I have just noticed the same thing myself. Otherwise sharp tech at the dealer had no ideas. I also noticed there was no "closure" on this topic.

Any updates? Was it the shock(s), or maybe a bushing, etc?

Thanks!

This is really old, but I feel I should finish what I started, both shocks were replaced and the noise was still there. My rear end fell apart sort of speaking in December 2014, axle shafts/bearings, planetary gears were toast. All was replaced new with OEM parts except the differential hub/assembly was NLA from Ford so now I have and Auburn diff. By the way that "clunk" from many years ago is now gone... go figure.:)
