Question??
Noticed at the Ford dealer today that 98-04 CV's used in security work have a unique engine oil cooler.
Special oil filter mount (#6881) with built in engine oil outlets. Maybe built in temp. sensor valve in it.
A radiator fluid exchange pod (6A642) that mounts low on front. The radiator fluid passes over the oil tubes in this small cylinder.
It would only cool as much as the radiator does however.
Found it on p-35197,CPD 2000 Version 16.08-May 2004
1998 A (FORD)
oil filter w/ oil cooler
Does anyone know how this works and how efficient it is ??? Could we adapt it for us to use ???

Don't know about adaptation but let me give you a little info on why they want engine oil to be a least as hot as the coolant. The curve for "metal wear" is very high below 160 degrees F., starts to drop off fast till about 180 then slowly till 230 or so where it starts to rise again. This is one of the reasons why thermostats are generally 185 and higher. 160 degree engines wear out faster so it makes sense to not be constantly sending cold oil to the bearings where the cylinder oiling comes from.

The engine oil cooler is standard on the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. They have been around since 1994.
Have you priced this? List for the cooler alone is near $400. Add the oil filter adaptor and gasket for another $150. Ray (the Dealer) might do better for you.
I have a 1 1/2 set (2 coolers, 1 gasket and 1 adaptor). I'm toying with the idea of installing it on my 1992 GM LS HPP with the full blue hose set.
Just my .02 and then some.

I noticed some police interceptors with blue silicone radiator hoses recently. Are these the hoses you are refering to? Are they available for the Maurader?

The blue hoses are a CVPI option and are only available for the SOHC 4.6 engines. It would be cool if they made the set. Who knows, if MMs keep up ending in police fleets, then they might do something there.

My friend does fleet service for taxis and has had more than a few develope internal leaks - engine oil to coolant while running, then coolant to oil after shutdown!
I'll pass on this one!

I can believe it especially the way that the gasket is designed. But how many vehicles had problems? Was it just the early ones or later models? The kit(s) that I have were for '01-'02 CVPIs but never installed. They came with the replacement engines.

They were all on early ones - I haven't got any updates from him for a few years now. All high miles. Not a question of if but when.

I installed a CVPI oil cooler on my car when I put the new supercharged engine in. Picked up the cooler, hoses and holder bracket for $50 at a salvage yard. However I could not find an oil filter adapter cheap, so paid the dealer price. Also wound up changing my oil press sending unit, as my original one did not work right with it.

The gasket is the same for the oil cooler or w/o. The taps for the oil filter and the inlet of coolant are shared by the oil filter adapter by both designs. The PI unit additionally has external taps for the oil cooler and a spring regulating device.
