View Full Version : Rough idle and raspy exhaust tone

The other day I went to mail a package and notice the car was shaking slightly, and then it randomly shut off while parked. Once I got it started up so I could drive home I noticed that the car was shaking harder and sounded like a diesel engine, plus the exhaust was really raspy. Checked for codes and got p1000 and p1090. If anyone has any insight into this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, video!

belt slip maybe, old belt, or pulle or idler bad. sounds bad idling. possibke valve knock, or vac leak. p1000 is ford's drive cycle code. meaning all monitors have not set. did you lose power/battery? you can google ford drive cycle to see what it entails. i would not drive it.

Possible causes
– Low fuel pressure(pump or blockage)
– Large vacuum leak on engine(vacuum line off)
– Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
– Faulty Ignition(coil)
– Faulty fuel injector
My guess is fuel pump or pump driver module

Also check CIA for loose/air leak/crack etc.
Bad /old Gas? Stored recently? Ever changed out fuel filter?
+2 wouldn't drive, rev, or run it if you can avoid it.

Fuel filter was replaced last year and belt was changed a few months ago, not sure about bad gas but I did have to go to another gas station than my usual thanks to the hurricane. I'll check the spark plugs today.

Spark plugs are all in place, replaced the fuel rail pressure regulator and there's pressure but I don't have the tool to measure it. Checked oil and it's still there and good. Belt is still in one piece and none of the pulleys are loose. Double checked my receipts to verify I bought premium and not regular like an idiot, though that's not a guarantee that I got good gas. There was an issue in the left side coil plugs having oil around them near the top but the spark plugs were clean.
No other codes than the P1000 is showing up.

Hard to tell with all the drone, but it sounds like it's skipping to me. Also, hearing a sort of tapping or clacking noise in the idle video.
Time for a compression test.

What happens when you put the AC on. It doesn't sound like it but if it gets worse when the AC is on it could be the idle control switch or a vacuum leak which has the same symptoms.

If nothing else was touched, (no under hood work) it might be something as simple as bad gas, especially with the hurricane issue. If it started fairly quickly after the last refueling. Might try a clean gas additive or if possible syphon and refill. If you can store the 15 gal, it is a cheap and easy test, and no real loss of funds as if this doesn't fix the issue you can always use in a vehicle.
Otherwise, +1 on above. Vac leak, CAI leak?

Sorry gents but I'm an idiot. Despite there being oil on the dipstick and the oil gauge telling me there is at least some pressure, well there wasn't any oil at all. Not sure where it all went, I probably hit something in the aftermath of the hurricane but it's a completely idiotic and embarrassing way to ruin an engine.

I was going to say, that sounded like bearing knock in the video. I'm in for a rebuild as well...
Oh well. Time to build it stronger and better.
