Just wanted some opinions. I am by no means a super smart person but not dumb. So let me splain this to you. My DBP is an eaton swap car 9psi runs well. Tonight on the way home from work I accidentally left traction control on (almost always shut it off) and stabbed it at about 20mph entering the highway. She kicked from 2nd to 1st and rpm'ed up shifted at 6200 and broke loose. I have the radio on and the windows down you know, not paying attention. It goes to 2nd and I see the traction light blink on the dash and it noses over. Crap. Dumb ass so I let out and roll back into it. Ruh roh sputter sputter struggling. Awwww crap. I get it home. No noises. But missing and surging. Get it in the garage CEL comes on. Misfire on 7, misfire detected in 1st 1000 rpms and a circuit code for 7. Swap coils, miss does not move. Check wiring all good. Unplug injector on 7 makes no difference. Pull #7 awwwwwwwwwww crap. She is smashed closed. Now, so we are clear no smash marks on plug, not signs of impact, just closed and wet with fuel. Welllllllll, crap. My simple butt cleans the plug, gaps it and moves it to #6. Fire in the hole. No miss, no codes. Free rev engine no noises no nothing....................... .............................

WHAT THE F CLOSED MY PLUG GAP?!?!??!?!:burnout::bigcry:: bs:

Just posting this for intelligent responses. I am borrowing a scope to look at the top of the piston to see if there are any witness marks. I am the guy that moved plugs and coils and after I don't see anything on the piston will go out and WOT it again to see what she does. But I want to know if any of you boosted guys have had something odd like this happen to you. Why 7, why just one plug? Why would I not see a spread of a few cylinders if traction control cut cylinders under a heavy load under boost? Did it stretch a rod? No noise from engine on a free rev. Have not had it under a load yet. Living the dream, Marauder on. Thanks fellas.

That’s close, change your oil ASAP. Even try 5-40. Worst case the 7 cylinder bearing is worn the most, best case oil break down change the oil. I’m sure there are other ideas that make perfect sense but I’m just stating what I would do.

I mean it is due for an oil change. Has been 3200 miles just got back from an 800 mile trip with no issues. But I will not change oil viscosity to make up for something that has stretched or been hurt due to detonation. I am hoping it was a chunk of carbon ;) LOL

Looks like mine did when I broke ring lands on several pistons.....#7 being the worst!!:(

Get a bore scope and look in there to see what happened before running it anymore!!:shake:

Good Luck!!

Interesting, on a supercharged MM the gap would be around .030-.035 inch. The picture does not show that the plug was crushed (smashed) but only that the ground electrode is bent over contacting the center electrode.
It seems the plug had worked loose and contacted the piston. You didn't state if the plug was loose or seemed loose when you removed it.

After repair the engine ran OK.

Since the torque for these plugs is not very much and the head is probably the version with minimum threads the loose plug barely contacted the piston "pushing" it tighter against the threads for what may seem like normal torque.

All in all your engine dodged the bullet.

Go in peace.

What plug is that? Is it the stock one or something else. It just looks longer than the ones I put in mine. Might be my imagination though but maybe worth looking into. Good luck!!!

^^^^this^^^^ sorry, but these are clearance motors, a little detonation, a broken land, and your living on borrowed time.

Plug is ngk suggested for boosted applications gapped to .028". Plug was not loose. Engine not making any noise or missing. Will look into the hole tonight!

Caution: Mine broke lands on 3 pistons and bent a rod but ran GREAT when I opened up the closed plug.....ran it just enough to get it on a trailer and to Shrader Performance for rebuild!!:(

I would not run it much more until you confirm what may have closed that plug!!:shake:

BTW.....they found a hand full of beat up aluminum pieces inside my intake manifold so if this happened to yours you stand the chance of sucking the pieces back into the engine if you run it more!!

Hopefully the bore scope will give you some insight and hopefully better news than I'm guessing it is??

Also, there have been cases where detonation and heat alone closed the plug gaps without ring land(s) breaking......hopefully this is as far as yours went!!;)

Good Luck and looking forward to what you find with the scope!!

Ring land. Sorry bro. Make sure it blew out the exhaust valve and drive it like a normal Joe until you have the time and money.

While looking into the hole tonight be sure to save some energy to check out the car too.

Pure speculation ,
Albeit phenomenal and well earned.
The motor is hurt !
Just do your thing and start your plan.

Ringland on #7 is toast and its a little beat up in there. #6 was pretty clean. Oh well. Thanks for the help. But I am blaming the new badgeless grill. It allowed more air into the engine which made it go lean. Yeah that's my story and I am sticking too it!

Did you change the oil yet? There may be hope. Make sure your blinker fluid level is up too.

Boy that sucks....:depress:

These 4.6 DOHCs are pretty fragile.
Do the MACH I guys have as many problems when they put boost on them?

No clue. A little of this was my lack of discipline to keep my foot out of it knowing it had fuel in if from BFR Missouri "93" from our trip to the mini meet. Also leaving traction control on is a nono and ultimately could have caused its demise. Either way everything happens for a reason. I beat the ever living crap of out this car for the past 21K miles since it was Eaton swapped with very few issues. So I will do what I know how to do.......... build it better the next time around and repeat beating the daylights out of it. But seriously though, anyone see's a good deal on a short block or engine let a brother know! :)

That head will be just as bad, if not worse. Noland can fix it, but you will need some lead time.

At least you got 21k out of it with some miles on the motor already.

The real pain is only going 5k eaton on a 24k motor and having it take a *****.

Or maybe the intake valve. I've found piston pieces in the bottom of an intake manifold before.

It's always that next psi of boost that breaks brand new valves

I have personally done it
