Well had the Rauder out Saturday, on the way home the radio starts flashing, the dash lights go out, the Christmas tree of warning lights all light up... notice the headlights acting funny, glance down at the volt meter.... 6.... crap! I made it to the shop to grab my truck thankfully... Yep, Alternator puked at 147,000 miles.... good thing I stock a spare!

I had that happen once but then the headlights and side marker lights went into "police mode" where they were alternating on and of. I must have done something to get the lights to flicker like that and its never happened again.
Are you holding onto the old one to get rebuilt or is it better to just purchase a new one next time?

IMHO...
I'd get the original one rebuilt by a trusted source.

Just curious. Are there any benefits to rebuilding an old alternator versus a new one? Will a rebuilt last longer than new one or other reason?

Chris-
Sounds familiar buddy
The same scenario with my car the Saturday before this past weekend mine did the same.
Hvac stopped, no radio, heated seats stopped, Christmas tree lights up on the dash....
I wasn't sure if the belt went, or the alternator pooped, so I kept my eye on the coolant temp
We made it to my parents house from downtown KC on 9 volts, pulled the alt and the armature got eaten away where the brush pack wears
I ended up going to www.car-part.com and found one 18 miles away, walked in and all in with clutch $43.00
Works great and now I have a core to keep for rebuilding, bought the 33 spline socket off eBay for $5.99 so I can pull the clutch off

Most "rebuilt" ones from parts stores don't last long. Getting one rebuilt by a trusted local shop will usually last longer and work better.
Buy a "new" one is very expensive.

I'm taking my original in right now to have it rebuilt by my local guy.

Are there any benefits to rebuilding an old alternator versus a new one? In addition to the comments above, there's the fact that most parts-store alternators are the wrong ones for the Marauder. Something to do with the voltage regulator. By getting yours rebuilt, at least you know it will be correct.
The Marauders use the 4th generation alternator also knows as 4G the correct regulator is Motorcraft part# vp6l8u-10c359-aa. I've rebuilt a couple for people as long as you have the correct regulator you are good to go. Bearings brushes, regulator and lastly the rectifier is what fails.

So I see the MM has a white regulator and it's pwm'd by our computer
Can you just put our white regulator on a CV alt and it should charge fine?

Geez, another thing I had no idea about. I would have just bought a new one and figured it would be like the OEM with no issues. Mine is still OK at 115K but will keep this in mind.
I saw that nice bling 250 amp knit someone posted here a few weeks ago, but that’s probably overkill for my car.

My OEM one was acting weird so I got it replaced under warranty!! I have 200K miles on the second one and have a Ford re-maned one on the shelf just in case...bought it 10 years ago since I knew parts would become scarce in time!!
