View Full Version : Transmission Limits Question

So, I looked through the older threads and haven't really found a concrete answer to my question. I am boosting my marauder and wanted to find out the limits of the transmission. Seems I get different answers. And what exactly does a J Mod include. I see the sticky about it but it doesn't seem to say what all is involved.
If I stay at 500HP, will I be safe? Some say the transmission can't handle S*** but that doesn't answer my question. I realize that if I want to go higher than that, the engine will need rebuilt or swapped. That's easy to understand. But the transmission seems to have varying opinions. I would appreciate any input without ambiguous statements :) Unless of course there is no set limit and it all just simply depends. Thanks guys

Hard to say..I've seen these trans break at 350 hp..gonna depend on how you drive it, the torque numbers, if you remember to turn OD off when you hammer on it. I'm in same boat..495rwhp, stock trans, but not stock converter

The limit of the trans is reached just before it grenades.

Ok, looked it up. Sounds good to me and I'll just let the shop do it. But this will work for the 2004 trans right? From what I understand I need to look up which one I specifically have but I'm assuming the same limitations are going to come into play. Also, does this make it safe to go to around 500HP? The articles didn't mention how much safer it makes it but that it does make it safer. I can't open the forums here at work but will do so later.

My commute to work makes it so that I have to pound the throttle due to me turning on to a road with fast, oncoming cars. I will have to remember to turn off OD everytime. I normally do but forget sometimes. I just want my car to be as safe as can be as I mod it. My builder is a great guy and knows his stuff but it is just my nature to get second opinions. I do that with my doctors too LOL

Hardened stub shaft AND hardened direct drum is a must. If you do nothing else, do these 2 upgrades. Freddie Brown for the drum. Everyone carries the stub shaft.

From the article: "The J-Mod can be performed on any AODE, 4R70W, 4R75W, and 4R75E."
The J-Mod has nothing to do with increasing how much HP the trans can handle.
Again from the article:
"J-Mod: What is it?
The J-Mod (or Jerry's Mod) is named after the Ford Transmission Engineer, Jerry Wroblewski, who helped in the design of the AODE/4R70W transmission and came up with these modifications. The J-Mod is intended to increase shift speed and decrease wear on the clutches of the automatic transmission."

Drill the valve body but don't remove the springs completely. Put in firmer ones, like from the Mustang. The jmod is annoying otherwise. IMHO

Okay, the article I looked up only mentioned 4R70W. As I said, I couldn't open the links you provided here at work.
I guess I am asking about the HP ability only because it is said that the stock transmission cannot handle high HP output. So my natural assumption was that jmodding it would help handle higher HP due to the mod allowing it to handle shift speed better and decrease wear. So, from what I understand now, the issue with the trans is that higher power causes the parts to wear faster and the mod allows for those parts to not wear as easily. I hope I am understanding that correctly.

See tbone's post...... about installing better parts to handle higher HP.
J-Mod will "HELP" with the transmission's longevity because there is less slipping of the clutches. NOTE: If you trans is in bad shape the J-Mod won't fix anything.
I could be wrong but the J-Mod WILL NOT enable the stock trans to handle increased HP due to the weak parts still in the trans.

The standard stub shaft will twist. The hardened one will simply twist the standard drum. You need both. Ask me how I know.

I gave you the link to Freddie Brown. Study it.

Stock engine? If it is and planning on throwing 500 at it, then you’ll have more issues than a trans soon enough.
I️ was at 461 for a few years and never an issue with the block or trans.

Twisted 2 separate stub shafts. Then snapped one of the old style ones with the ring grooved in the end of the splines (discontinued late 90's) that my old trans builder snuck in. Then went 300m shaft only to have the teflon ring on the pump snap. When they went to inspect everything they saw that the 300m stub shaft was twisting the stock direct drum. Freddie Brown hardened drum to the rescue. Any more questions?

I put my stock springs back in. Shifts buttery smooth under normal driving and shifts nice and firm at about 1/2 throttle and up.
Otherwise I agree. A straight up J-mod gets annoying after a while.

The 2-3 shift is ok, but the 1-2 shift especially at light to medium throttle sucks.
