Ok so I'm having obnoxious intermittent problems with both. My wipers often wipe for no reason and my power steering cones and goes as it pleases. I've already removed the cowl and cleaned out the massive amount of dirt from there but the wipers are still wack. And I've cleaned the speed sensor on the rack yet the power steering still comes and goes. The rack especially is WAY more money than the aftermarket stuff. These car is bleeding me dry, especially after Christmas, so has anyone used aftermarket brands to replace these parts? Any good brands? Anything to avoid?

Prices are the same though for a vic or GM

These are parts you should be able to get at your local FLAPs; Pep Boys, Advanced, NAPA, etc. for reasonable prices. Since the same parts are shared with the GMQ, it shouldn't be too expensive.

$357 vs $145 for the most expensive aftermarket steering rack is a substantial price difference at my income level lol. So if anyone has experience with aftermarket brands, Good or bad, I'd be interested to hear about it.

It could be your VAPS module behind the glove box. Discontinued

What he said, if the car sometimes has hard like steering, then the module behind the glove box should fix it.
When was the last time you changed the ATF fluid in your power steering?

I have this said box in a parts car 2003 300a

You dont need a rack, please describe more issues with your steering.

From the forums here I had read that the racks sensor gets dirty/fails and this is what causes power steering problems. Sometimes the power steering works fine, sometimes it gets tighter than normal, and sometimes it's like I don't even have PS. I've also noticed it tends to turn left a little bit easier than right whenever it's acting up. Also, when it's tight, the car runs different. It's hard to explain, but it feels like a truck, more like it has more torque but not horsepower? When the PS is fine it feels like its faster from stops, acceleration, etc.

Wipers are currently my number one problem, being that its winter, anybody tried an aftermarket motor? Good or bad luck with them?

you might check belt tension

tyler, for the intermittent tight steering try lubricating the u-joint in the steering shaft with WD40 or similar. It lives right next to the exhaust manifold and is a fairly common issue. Just douse it and turn the wheel back and forth then douse it some more. Had this happen on Mac's Marauder when it was Mary's and it's happened a couple times on my Grand Marquis.

If you had, as you say, "massive amounts of dirt" in the wiper cowl and it was there for a while, then the wiper motor control board may just be shot. I've not heard anything bad about any particular aftermarket wiper motors, but for some things Motorcraft just seems to be the only thing that lasts.

Pull the flapper door off the bottom of the cowl when you're in there to prevent this from happening again. Pull the wiper motor, take it apart, dry it, scrub it well with 70% IPA; all the electronics boards and components. Douche it real well, and scrub it real well with a toothbrush. Place it in a 150deg warming oven and leave it there for 4 hours. Pull it out, seal up the enclosure well with RightStuff or whatever you love, and reinstall. If it works, you're welcome. If not, throw it away and buy a new one. Mine went bad 140K miles ago and was completely submerged in water. I bought a new one, but reconditioned my old one and kept it as a spare. A member here had a bad wiper and had helped me previously, so I sent it to him gratis and I know for a fact that it was working 40K miles later when he sold the car.

Isn't it there for some reason?

Pulled the motor last night n followed the repair instructions on the sticky to do it. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I need it fixed for tomorrow so I got an A1 cardone remanufactured one from Oreilys. If it's garbage I'll let everyone know, but by the looks of it, should be good. I'm gonna be sure to grease the edges of the black plastic cover good and hopefully it'll be safe from moisture. The car has 195k miles on it so I guess I shouldn't be too down about having to buy a $104.99+tax part once in awhile.

Yes it is there for a reason. Engineers just don't add cost without some benefit.

I left the flapper, and replaced the wiper motor with a remanufactured one, so far it works like factory new! No complaints.
