I bought myself a Milwaukee cordless impact for Christmas. It says it has 1100 ft/lbs of torque. I'm worried I'm going to strip a axle stud when tightening a lug nut. Do those torque sticks really work and if so, can someone recommend a good brand or source?

Whenever somebody used a Torque Stick on one of my vehicles the lugs weren't even close to consistent or uniformly to-spec. Never.

what Accumulator said ^^^

The only way to ensure proper torque is to use a torque wrench.

That rating is generally a reverse rating on most impacts.

If have the newest one, it should have two modes. Mode 1 = 100 ft lbs Mode 2 = 700 foot pounds, both rated in forward.

Try mode 1 “lightly”, then verify with a torque wrench. It had fastening lug nuts in mind when designed.

I have the same impact on my service truck. It is quite powerful, but also very controllable with some practice. If in doubt, use a torque wrench.
Torque sticks require a "calibrated" impact, specific air pressure, and alignment of the planets to work correctly. The only thing I use from my set is the chart of torque specs.

Thanks for the responses. I was more concerned about over torquing the lugs ans thought a torque stick would prevent that. I always re-check the lugs by hand.

No problem. Solid theory, but I believe a powerful impact can transfer more than the rated torque through the torque stick.
It's easy enough to perform final tightening with a torque wrench. One company I worked for required it. Lots of fun to torque all the wheels on a semi by hand.

I use my cordless to remove and restart the lug nuts; but a torque wrench is the only way a wheel should be tightened.

"TORQUE STICKS" !???

Is that something that they offer to all Honda and Terdyota owners??

BTW: I use a Torque Wrench to put on my lug nuts.
The Fusion Sport specifies 150 FT/LBs.....more than most Hondas and Terdyotas have!

:D

Never understood how these things work. It's a solid piece if metal rod with no clutch or break point, and the mechanics use the same air gun as they do for everything else. Spend your money on a torque wrench. Is Brownline still a sponsor here. Thought I read they had a good torque wrench for reasonable money.

What is the proper torque setting for our lug nuts?
