That car is from Arizona no wonder it has a large fart pipe. The air is a lot dryer and hotter out there so it needs the larger opening to reduce back pressure caused by the expanding gases through the exhaust.

Now the ricers are putting rocket engines on their cars.

Guess they must've heard of Mike Zavislak's "priceless" encounter!

Anybody remember the movie "Hopper"?

One day I was hanging out in my favorite speed shop in CA.When a guy walks in and ask about drag chutes.Sure my buddy says, how fast is the car?Well OCIR said I ran over 150mph and I need a chute,I don't know how fast it is.Really what kinda car is it?

Oh it's that one outside. Wow,cool, ah... where is it?

It's that HONDA CIVIC.

Say what? Get outa here your wasting my time.

No really,check it out.

So we head outside and the guy tips the license plate down and behind it is a little nozzle about 6" in dia. Ever heard of a perroxcide rocket?Talk about a sleeper.

This was 1980 or 81.

In 1983 I was stationed in Pheonix.Firebird raceway, mid summer.A rocket car shows up,aint no Civic.Same guy.At the time the timing systems only read to 350mph.

The car ran 4.28secs at over 350mph,the mph screen showed all 888.88.
The place went dead silent! This was long before the first top fuel run under 5sec.

He was asked not to come back...

Holy jet engine, Batman!
That was my first thought - it looks like the tailpipe from the old Batmobile!
Now if it only shoots flames...

I saw a go-cart rigged up with one of those little peroxide rocket engines run at Bristol way back in the days when Art Arfons ran the Green Monster jet cars.

It was just an exhibition run. The little go-cart staged, lit up and POOFFF it was at the finish line. Amazing.

....Ever heard of a peroxide rocket?...Yup. The Germans used a peroxide rocket to launch the V-1 "Buzz Bombs" in WWII and they later made a fighter plane called the Komet in '44. It used hydrogen peroxide (90%) and methyl alcohol and was very volatile and dangerous. Many planes blew up during fueling because no ignition system is needed, the two liquids spontaneously ignite when mixed. A very fast plane indeed 500+ mph within 1 minute.

We can also thank those German engineers for thinking up the nitrous oxide systems we use today. They developed those to get 10,000 extra feet of altitude from their FW190 fighters so they could attack the British Mosquito light bombers that had turbochargers.

War, we bring good things to life. :burnout:

There was a moron a few years ago that attached JATO units to the rear of his Chevy and ended up crashing into a bank at around 300 mph. The rear bumper of the car had some of his 'tissue'on it. Nasty!

JATO units are normally used to assist in short takeoffs on Army transport planes and are basiclly small solid fuel rockets.
