Ok so my question is when the car is cold at first start up is the cooling fan supposed to be on or low speed mines doesn’t turn but as soon as I turn the ac on it quicks on high which is normal I’m developing a bit of overheating without the ac on any thoughts ?

Most likely its the fan controller, you would need to test it to make sure the low side of the fan is working.
I generally just replace both at the same time, but you can replace them individually.

I’m confused do you have any reference pictures of the fan controller all I can see is a module on the back of the fan.

Ok I will look into it, also my friend has a DTR with 72k miles and has the same thing fans shuts off when the car is idling without the ac I’m trying to find it out if it’s normal on these cars because on the crown Vic’s and grand marquis the cooling fan is always on low setting and high for the ac.

Fixed it for you.
I believe this correct..............

Thanks, Jim...yes, the fan should come on immediately with the A/C or the defroster, which runs the A/C compressor as long as the outside temp is over 39°F.

Could be overheating because it is low on coolant.
Try checking the cot to see if it is low on coolant, the fan doesnt just come on when you start the car.
As the above said, it should come on when a certain temp is met, and or if the ac is turned on.
Does the car not overheat with the ac on? / as in low speed doesnt work?

Ok I drove about 7 miles then I parked it looked under the hood fan is not running, I then turned on the ac to cool the car went back to normal temperature.

Just out of curiosity, have your tested the cap on the degaussing tank, a bad cap will let the motor overheat.

Have you burped the system?

There are two temperature sensors in the coolant crossover. One is associated with the fan, the other is associated with other PCM functions. Maybe a bad sensor?

Yep I replaced the passenger sensor that was my previous issue were the fan would always be on high as soon as your turned the car on but that is fixed, I will replaced the fan assembly soon hopefully is fixes the issue.

I just confirmed, for both my 2000 and my 2004 GMQ that the fan does not run all the time. I was able to command both low and high on and off using FORScan.

For now I’ll just turn the ac on when I see the temperature go up a bit until I can figure out what’s really going on, I will also borrow a fan assembly from a friend to see what happens as soon as I find the problem I will update the post, thanks guys for talking ya time to help.
