Hi all!

So I did a burnout the other day which I don't do on a regular basis. I noticed only one skid mark which leads me to believe my posi is gone (clutches)?

Questions- If I did not do the burnout, how would I have known since I haven't noticed any other symptoms?

What are the longer term effects/damages that can result? Not sure how long this has been going on.

Does this mean there's power only to one rear wheel now?

Just got 4.10s installed about 3 years ago, feeling pissed!

Plan to get this fixed at a speed shop in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for any info!

Your Traction-Lok rear has worn out clutches.
You would only notice this when doing a burnout or accelerating in slippery road conditions.
They can be rebuilt with new shims and clutch plates.*

BTW: It is rare that I notice only one skid mark after a Taco Bell lunch!......:D

* A fresh set of 'whitey-tighties' might be in order too!

No damages will happen. Have the shop put a clutch kit in and you'll be good to go. You can get a standard kit or a cobra/kevlar kit. You're call.

Sounds like worn out clutches, but sometimes a clutch-type posi symptoms can be misleading. If you do a burnout but one side is on a lower friction surface than the other (like wet/dry or pavement/gravel or pavement/paint stripe) then the one with lower friction will spin and continue to spin alone until the burnout is over. Both wheels may spin the next time if friction is equal but if it is always a peg-leg burnout and most commonly the passenger side, then the clutches need to be replaced. Sometimes the spider gears get messed up too, so changing the whole posi unit is usually a good move.

There's a YouTube channel called "ChrisFix" that has a fantastic tutorial of this procedure on a Mustang GT with the 8.8 rear. This doesn't seem to be beyond the realm of possibility for any shadetree mechanic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUJ9h_-t_e0
