The trans in my MM started acting up occasionally in 2016. Would shift in to drive and it wouldn't go in to gear - just sat there doing nothing. Would play around with it and would finally engage. It happened more frequently as time went on so I decided to pull trans and rebuild it before getting stranded somewhere.

Yanked it out last spring and of course life, $$$ and weather got in the way of completing the job.

Today I finally finished the job. Took her out on a 20 mile test drive and it ran great. Got in to the boost a little bit toward the end of the trip and chirped 2nd with small fishtail - love it! :D

When trans disassembled the entire thing looked like the day it was built, clean clear fluid with zero sediment and nothing on the magnets. The only visible issue was the OD band showed sings of getting hot.

Found the problem causing no drive engagement was the case wore where the OD band servo piston shaft goes through it (steel shaft/aluminum case) which was also the reason the band was slightly burnt. This is a known issue with the AOD/4R70W/4R75. When case wears fluid pressure leaks past the piston causing the band to not engage/slip. This issue is repaired with the Sonex ZipKit, the kit addresses all the problematic issues of the trans.

Really looking forward to driving it now, having boost withdrawals all this time sucked!

What "Special Tools" do I need to acquire to accomplish these mods? My tail-shaft and housing are broken after the U-joint failed. The transmission had around 90K on it at the time.
Thanks!
Tom

Inch pound torque wrench is about the only specialty tool. Access to a press for clutch pack rebuilds is helpful but not necessary as you can knock together a tool from 2x4s for a few bucks. The tool for the band servo piston removal/install is easily made from some square metal stock & bolts/threaded rod. Blade feeler gauges for clutch pack tolerance check.

Anyone who rebuilds their own auto trans is a wizard in my book.

In actuality the 4R70W (AOD based) is an extremely simple design, Jerry is a genius.

If a person has mechanical aptitude, can change a waterpump and has the ability to follow instruction, they could rebuild this trans.

The main thing with trans work is you have to be precision minded, if when working on things a person says "good enough" they should steer away from trans work.

Freaking awesome stuff Bill.

If I am able to fix or buy another MM. I know where to send my transmission now! [emoji13]

Sent from the White House on the tax payers dime.

Does anyone here know if the tail housing and shaft will interchange between the 4R70W and 4R75? I located a 2006 GM in the salvage yard and I'm thinking of getting the transmission and using the parts off of it to repair the 4R70. I believe it's 4R75.
Thanks!

Have no idea. PM the question to 88grandmarq he'll be able to answer it.

The tailshaft is different. 4r75w has an increased number of teeth for the output speed sensor.

the oss teeth count is easily adjusted in the ecu though no problem

the 4r75 does need a touch more blip pressure than the 4r70 but otherwise they are basically identical and easily interchangeable
