View Full Version : COT O-Rings Lube

As long as I park my MM nose up the COT o-rings don’t leak, but I’ve got to get it done. As I recall, Bob posted to get the old o-rings off, clean up the ends of the COT with a wire brush, then install the new rings and give them a coating of silicone grease.

My question is on the grease. Should I use non-adhesive silicone RTV? I know the stuff I use on home plumbing fixtures seals and o-rings may not be glycol resistant.

I also have some Permatex water pump & thermostat housing silicone RTV which might work better.

I don’t want to put it back together dry, but also don’t want to have it harden or lock up. The light silicone spray I have doesn’t seem heavy enough.

Thanks for any info.

Norm

I wouldn't advise you to use a wire brush on your Northern COT. I would also advise against using any type of silicone sealant unless you plan on never removing it again.

Use super fine steel wool to clean with a touch of oil. As far as the O rings I've always used white grease to seat the O rings without tearing them.

Plumbers grease works wonders. I know because I’m a Plumber.. [emoji1303]Just make sure you do all four O rings. No sense in only doing the two risers.

Perfect thanks. LOL! I thought there were -3- o-rings? One each on the risers, and one in the middle? Know I read that somewhere, but must have missed a 4th in the middle. Luckily I have one extra.

I’m going to sand out some of the rust on the underside of the COT and paint it at the same time. Still solid, but it’s a bit rough under there. Thanks again.

Thanks, the 0000 steel wool is a better idea. That was also my fear of not being able to get the thing out again, even though the silicone is non-adhesive supposedly. Appreciate the tips.

Got it, thanks. I imagine that’s way less likely to leak in the middle with that double setup, but I’ll change them anyway while I’m in there. Appreciate it.
