Hello all,

My '04 Marauder started making some clickity-clack noises earlier in the week. This was happening both at idle time and while driving although it got louder while I drove. I brought it to the dealership. They got back to me today and stated:

The tech was able to finish the diagnosis. It's the main tensioner guides. With that comes a list of parts - mainly gaskets for taking off the valve covers and intake. It's not going to be a cheap repair. Once we open it up we can see if there's more than just the main tensioner guides broken. To repair it would be around $2,200.00.

Does this sound reasonable to you from a price perspective?

Thanks

Seems high to me, it’s not that hard of a job and I think parts are in the mid $250 range, but if you time is worth 2 k, then go for it

Wow. I don’t even work on my own cars anymore unless forced and I’ll do your guides for half that!

Pretty spot on for Ford parts/labor. Book time is 6.7hrs, add an hour for cushion and and hour for diagnosis, 8.7 hours, $150/hr that's $1300 in labor. Sure an aftermarket timing kit off rockauto is $250, but at least double that for Ford OEM parts, and that's also not going to count the valve cover gaskets, upper and lower intake gaskets that are each $50 to $80.

Don't forget that your repair at the dealership comes with a 2yr unlimited mileage warranty that covers parts, labor and related damage - good luck getting that from aftermarket parts or an independent shop.

But yes, a backyard mechanic could do it for half that.

My price point was $231 is rock auto steel tensioners reuse the chains

Tasca nylon guides: 230 bucks with the seals for cam covers and timing cover

Please let me hear it before you pull the trigger

Located near Home Depot off lees summit road and 70 highway

Try STP, it's cheap.
