Okay, I'm officially retarded . . .

I was in a national park this weekend, and I backed up into a rock which punctured a 3/4-inch tear in my rear bumper cover. Since these are made of that flexible plastic, is it still possible to patch with some sort of flexible "Bondo" material, sand, and spot paint? About two square inches of the cover had the paint abraded off. Will I have to replace the entire bumper cover? Thanks.

My front had licence bracket holes that were patched so I would say yes.

Yep....

I got a patch kit from CarQuest to fix a small hole in my CV rear bumper!! It was a little pricey but look at what the cover costs after paint.....$750 or more!!

Give it a try.....If you cannot find it out your way I can get a kit here and send it to ya!!

Yes, they can fix small issues with the eurethane covers... Most body shops will prefer to replace though.

It can be repaired. There are many small bumper repair companies in most towns that specialize in the modern bumper covers. There are even some new mobile set ups that come to your location and can do excellent spot repairs with low-pressure guns (no over spray). Most of them offer lifetime warrantees.

Logan is right most shops prefer to replace covers to save time and to ensure a quality repair, but the methods for these types of repairs have come a long way in the past few years and should last the life of the vehicle if done properly.

I have a Volvo in my shop right now for a similar repair and it was just a little over $400. Of course labor rates are a little higher in your area. :)

There are some good products available through body shop suppliers specifically designed for these types of repairs. The repair material is supposed to be stronger than the original plastic. I would have a reputable body shop repair it. If the mobile repair shop does it, how can they keep trash out of the paint? And will they be around to stand behind the work?

We don't have CarQuest stores out here--do you have the brand and description of the product you tried? Thanks!

Thanks for everyone's replies--MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Yeah, I would just go to the body shop but . . . I just GOT OUT of the body shop. Maybe this is a good excuse to order that new rear bumper kit from Trilogy when it's ready.

Shooter: I had someone rearend me in a parking lot... they sc***** up my bumper fierce. A local body shop took the car at 8am, filled the scrapes, sprayed it (on the car), and had it back to me by the afternoon. You won't have any issues getting it fixed.

Thanks, for the info, Constable! How much was the repair?

Shooter, Did you ever get your bumper fixed? Price?

I had a friend back unto me this week. Bumper is OK but needs to be repainted. I went to three body shops. Each say the right thing to do is strip the paint then repaint. Cost was from $700-810. A new front bumper skin is $1200 without paint.

I'm thinking of trying to do this myself. Just thinking so far.....

Hey 33, I sc***** the side of my garage door and am thinking of trying the repair myself also. Please post your results. I put some touch up paint on it for the time being. Looks like hell, and everyone at Haggas' dyno tune doo noticed.:argh:

Funny you should ask . . . Yup, I FINALLY got it fixed just last week. I happened to see a "bumper repair" truck driving down the street, and had him follow me to work. They filled the fiberglas puncture and reinforced the broken left rear fiberglas bumper mount, painted and clearcoated the damaged area for $200 cash. Looks pretty good.
