Need some help. I'm doing my Cobra intake cam swap. According to the 2003 Mercury service manual (see attached pic) the 4V cam cluster cap is torqued to 14ftlbs. I've been cruising the internet looking for cam gear bolt torque for 98 Cobra motor as the bolt is significantly larger than the OEM Marauder bolt and keep coming across cam cluster cap torque listings of 7.5ftlb. Which is correct?

Thanks!

Do you mean the cam sprocket bolt?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk sorry re read it.. I used the marauders specs for the cam hold downs, and I used arp for the cam gears which came with their own torque spec, I wanna say it was 100 ftlbs dont hold me to.it tho, yes the 98 cams to have a larger bolt

Looks like 82-92 ft lbs is what they 98 cam bolts are torqued to

The 14ftlb is a Marauder spec, right out of the Ford book. I'm starting to believe this is an error on the book. This is my dilemma.

Going to check with my client that is a Ford tech to get correct number.

Thanks

Thanks, I kept finding these too but there is a lot of variance in numbers so wanted to check with the mm.net MM experts.

I am consistently finding 76-106inlbs or 90inlbs for the cam caps so it's looking like the Ford manual is wrong...

I only use Alldata and mine have held up fine at 14 ft lbs. I don’t recall using any other source. Best to confirm with your friend. I think I have a set of caps if you fudge them up!

I remember it being kinda scary..

Thanks Bob.

Already torqued driver side to 14ftlbs and then finding the bigger cam gear bolt sent me looking for torque spec.

Confirmed with Marty the 71-106 in. lbs. spec is correct. Caps didn't crack so will loosen & re-torque to correct number as advised after Checking with Troy for double confirmation.

I love this community... :lovies:

I’m sure it’s fine. Just think how many tens of thousands out there just between Ford’s and Alldata’s specs have been done!

If your friend is a Ford tech he can check if there was a TSB on the spec in the MM book.

I checked in at my local Ford dealer and Nico the parts guru looked it up on their online db and we found it currently lists 89inlbs.

So, everyone online & Marty are correct.

The 2003 Ford service manual is wrong. :mad2:

Thank you all for everything! :)

Nico knows his stuff! Way more than the average parts guy.
