Thanks for this. I will state what everyone else is thinking: you are the best board asset to come along in awhile. I've been reading this board since well before I requested membership in 2014.

You can buy the bulb with long wires off eBay and remove the old bulb from that case.
I think I bought 10 LED bulbs for 3 bucks from China a few years back

Invective - thanks! wait 'til you see how I butcher the AC system repair & recharge/LOL. As these cars age, I think it's important to try to keep as many of these magnificent beasts on the road, even as OEM parts get harder and harder to find...

Bryan - the old housing was burnt on the end and very brittle. I would not want to try to retro fit an LED into that. Not worth a car fire. Beside this bulb is 1/4 turn and done. Worth the extra 3 bucks. And not any different than stock/brightness.

I can upgrade to an led bulb and supply a new housing if needed. The LED is a much brighter light.

On a side note.... even if the end of the original housing is "crisp" adding an LED will actually lessen or eliminate the possibility of a "thermal event".

I was just looking for one of these for my Town Car. Hoping it fits the Merc as well. Thanks mucho for this post! I like the specificity on the website that identifies the old bulb. Duhr...

They all get a tad crispy from use..

What fb said too

Led doesn't create heat, so even a used housing is as good as a new one.. it just
Holds the bulb

here is another option the plastic housing is shorter but it works and is a green LED. As others have said you can use the light and the original housing if you prefer.
