Near the mid-point of the 1999 model year production, Ford introduced the Metal Matrix Composite (MMC/MMX) driveshaft. This driveshaft was only equipped on the 1999-2000 model years, with many of the earlier 1999 models, and some early 2001 models receiving the MMC driveshaft as part of a TSB / recall service - TSB 99-18-1 (http://www.gdmjoe.com/gothvic/driveline/MMCdriveshaft-tsb99181.pdf)

The original part number for this driveshaft was XW7Z-4602-AA

*Also distinguished by PINK and GREEN stripes painted around the driveshaft.

my memory is a little hazy on this but I believe it should be pink / green / green or pink / green / pink. orange or blue stripes would signify that its a normal aluminum shaft like we have.

All of these shafts are stamped "police" so don't let that lead you into believing you have an ammx. I've seen PLENTY of normal shafts with "police" on them, hell I just saw 2 for sale in the swap meet this year at carlisle which were 100% normal AL shafts.

How to identify the metal matrix aluminum drive shaft:
· Part number XW7Z-4602-AA
· Painted stripes pink and green and also blue (not always)
· The following printed or inscribed on the drive shaft “MMC Police ALCOA C291-T6”
· Shiny, smoother surface than the standard aluminum drive shaft
· Police interceptor with a build date of second half 1999 and all of 2000, rear axle ratio of DK or R2

Looks like that should have it! Good luck.

They only wanted $85 for it. I'm trying to see if they can send me pics of it first before I buy it. It's coming from a car in California. It has the right rear axle code also DK.

Two things I forgot about since I haven't had to look into AMMX's for a very long time.

1, they weigh about 2lbs less than our stock aluminum driveshafts

2, stripe or no stripe, something like this is the most reliable way to prove what it is

too much of a gamble then, w/o being able to compare it to a known ammx or normal aluminum driveshaft.

3 brand new ones still exist if you want to drop 1300 dollars with tousley ford

That would make too much sense. I don't know what those DS' were new, but Ford may have an approach like BMW does, where stock of a part dwindles, the price goes up. At some point inventory gets so low that the price absolutely spikes (talking hundreds of dollars per jump). This has happened to many of the parts for my M5, the left and right under body panels (we call the pork chops) which goes under the front bumper is 360 bucks per side IIRC, I think 5-6 years ago they were 80-100 bucks?
