View Full Version : Flange gaskets - use them, or RTV?

Did the SW longtube headers last year. The pal helping me with the job was pretty insistent that he's always just used form-a-gasket or RTV instead of actual gaskets on the flange by the H-pipe. I begrudgingly went along with him; now I've got a small leak there. SOOOOOOOOOOOO I bought some gaskets that I'll have to install, which is what I wanted in the first place.
Just wondering if anyone else has ever gotten away with the copper RTV only in this area? Looking back, it seems real stupid...

Use factory gaskets. Nothing else...

I have learned over the years that the H pipe gasket is identical to a grand marquis even though at most stores their computer says differently. Also most times not stocked and like $9.00 instead of $4.00 like the Marquis..?
Anyways, I’ve used the Marquis one at Advance at least twice over the years and never had a fitment or quality issue.

I just use 2-bolt, 2.5" gaskets from Amazon. I've reused them too and no leaks. But OEM is prob the best.

Yep, this was actually something Comin in Hot taught me like a decade ago when we put secondary cat delete pipes on my red car.
Adam your first mistake was taking tech advice from modern day CVN lol

Okay, so they showed up. What's the common wisdom on install? Use a thin bead of RTV to help them stay in place while mounting, or just mount 'em dry?

a person who derives pleasure, especially sexual gratification, from inflicting pain or humiliation on others.
"he was dubbed a dangerous sexual sadist by the judge at his trial"
Not much into pain, mostly, well depends really. And the older I get I prefer to be overpowered, humiliated, and dominated. [emoji6]
