Pushing the gear shift button to down shift into 3rd gear --nothing happens---was working and now --nothing---

Anyone experience this and know the fix possible---am thinking a fuse maybe . What can make this not happen!

Trans shift thru all 4 gears okay while driving but you cannot down shift??

Thanks.

Slide the shift handle down and make sure the wires are firmly connected. IIRC it's a small white plug connector. It's a tight fit in there so be careful not to pinch anything when sliding the cover back up. Been awhile since I had the cover down, seem to remember a spring in there somewhere, but that maybe if you remove the handle which you won't be doing. Any loose wires under the car near or on the transmission? Maybe you kicked up a rock and knocked something loose.

Does the OD light come on on the dash when you push the button? Probably not. It is most likely the switch in the shift handle. Need to take the console apart to get to the connector and take the shift handle off to replace switch.

If the overdrive light is stuck "on" and overdrive button does not work, replace the Ford Motorcraft F8AZ-7F293-AA Transmission Sensor on the drivers side of the transmission.

Thank you all whom have replied--It seems I need to review theses suggestions with some help ....hopefully my friend Jim Marton can help....he has rescued me so much with this car....lets hope he can again.... time to contact him--

BTW --to answer "Blown 3.8"- the light on dash DOESN NOT COME ON WHEN BUTTON PUSHED NOR ANY DOWN SHIFT--

Anyone else have ideas please send them this way.

Remove the shift knob by sliding the plastic shaft below the leather handle, remove the 2 torx screws. When you lift up on the shifter handle, you need to put a hand in front of the release knob, cause the spring will shoot the parts out onto the floor.... check to see if the wires came undone at the white connector, check the switch with a meter. Start the car, jump the wires on the harness leading down to see if the light on the dash comes on. HTH

Thank you --I may try doing what you said but admit am a bit scared as am not good with doing that stuff and I recall years ago now someone said the same about the spring causing an issue with other parts--just am not the electrical wiz i wish I was. MY neighbor is on cars may get him to help--thanks so much for all your help and all others as well.

Much appreciated.
