Lever position when reinstalling the shift cable to transmission

Hey Guys,

I'm re-attaching the shifter cable to the transmission (I took tranny out and had a shift kit added). I marked the location of the big attach nut so I've got the slot in the connector back to the same spot on the lever stud.
The shop manual I have calls for the lever to be in the overdrive position when the cable is re-attached.
I really have no idea what that (overdrive) lever position would look like.
I did accidentally move the lever back and forth a few times while attempting to reattach the cable.

Any ideas/help?

I’ve only been into a couple of these but I had same issues with how to setup shift lever. I ended up putting steering wheel column shifter in neutral, went back underneath to find park on trans, went back 2 detents to neutral then rotated digital transmission range sensor until the 2 smallest marks lined up, tightened the 2 sensor bolts then hooked up linkage. It still works fine but I know I’m missing something? Like what exactly the #307-351 TR sensor alignment gauge does that can’t be done by hand?

Shinker, thanks. I'll give this a try and let you know what I come up with. My question is how did you find "park" on the transmission?

Rotate the lever counterclockwise or toward the bell housing to the first position( or last it clicks into). Moving clockwise from there it will follow the shift pattern R N D 2 1. Neutral will be with the lever at the 11:00 position. Make sure the transmission range sensor is in the corresponding position when reinstalled.

Guys, thanks for the inputs above...much appreciated. I think I've done the equivalent; here is what I did.
I put the in car shifter in P (for Park) with cable unattached. Then I moved the lever on the tranny as far counter clockwise as possible. I attached the cable. Then I moved the in car shifter to overdrive (D), and then I loosened and adjusted the position of the big-nut/slotted connector which holds cable to the lever to the marks I had made with white paint prior to disassembly. I am pretty sure when I did this connection, the range sensor was in the corresponding position.
Does this sound ok?
