Hello, new guy here, hope you can help me, only owned my 2003 M.M. for a week, filled the gas tank for the first time and could smell gas fumes,
suspect a leak somewhere, after I drove about 20 miles the smell was gone, is it possible the leak is loose connection at top of tank?, is this a common
thing?,also is there only one model of fuel tank, my mechanic thinks there are 2 designs, so only adds to the confusion. Thanks Ranger:confused:

The fact that it was only fumes and after a fill up makes me think there may be a leak in one of the evap lines or the purge valve could be stuck open.

Hit another snag, looked up replacement fuel tanks for my 2003 M.M., I found listings for Spectra F42D and Spectra F42E, does anyone know correct one
for my car?. Thanks Ken

It could be the fuel filler hose between the neck and the fuel tank.
Ford had a recall on that part on my Villager years ago.

If you're able to get under there and take a look you should, I have seen the o-rings for the fuel pump sender swell and shrink as well, causing a seep, not enough to drip on the ground but enough where you'll see like a residue on the black plastics or the tank somewhere. The ethanol in fuels are not kind to rubber products. Just be sure. Also I don't think you would need a replacement tank unless you see somewhere it is compromised. There are lot of evap lines etc...which are meant for dealing with fumes and if they come off or crack the fumes don't go to charcoal canisters as intended they are vented to atmosphere and you smell them.

Mine was leaking where the filler neck goes into the tank. I just stopped filling it really full.

Just a reminder that there were some adventuresome folks who drilled holes in the shelf in the trunk to mount stuff and drilled into the tank.......might be worth checking!!
