Looks like my son has car trouble in the Augusta, GA area. He drove his 2001 Cougar down from VA today to see a friend (that's another story). Just found out he has a transmission problem. Light came on -- then off -- then on. Not sure of the whole problem or symptoms. He has checked trans fluid -- looks OK to him. He has experienced eratic shifting and some power loss in the past. Thought it was fixed. Guess not.

Anyone able to recommend a good L/M dealer or service center in the Evans, GA area (about 5 miles NW of Augusta). Appreciate any help from members in the area.

2001 Cougar has the CD4E transaxle, infamous for its problems in the V6 Duratec Contour/Mystique series as well.

How many miles on it and has it EVER been serviced ???

You can PM me if you don't want to answer in the post.

Check PM. Found a few items on the Cougar site regarding transaxle problems some big ... some not so big. Hope this is the latter. :)

Augusta Lincoln Mercury is right down the
road from Evans on (Washington Rd.)
in Martinez (West Augusta)
I also hear Cheesborough's Transmissions
has a good reputation. 724-1451
or Cottman Transmission in Martinez 434-1002
or Bobby Jones FORD on the Bobby Jones Expressway
big Ford Dealer 38 bays (Open on Saturday)

Good Luck!

MENINBLK,
Thanks for the PM info. Very helpful. He was able to get it to the dealer today to diagnose the transaxle problem. Work to be done on Monday. Will delay his return trip by one day. Hope all goes well with no reoccurences on the way home.

MENINBLK,

Well, my son is back home safely from Augusta. GA. The transaxle was completely flushed per your advice. He said the service manager quoted the 30,000 mile interval --- he cited your 12,000 mile expertise and told 'em the book was wrong. The flush was good enough to get him 600 miles up the road to Virginia with no reoccurrences of the dreaded "exclamation point" light. Still needs to get into the shop here for a full checkout. But, I feel much better that he is back on his home turf.

Thanks A Million.

Merc-O-matic,
Sorry. My bad ... did not mean to slight your advice in the least. I believe if you check your PMs, you will find an unread note of thanks from a couple days ago.

Again, thanks to all who responded to my request for assistance.
