Replace Broken Guides

I was out at the market, when I came out and started the car, I heard a little pop.
As soon as that happened, the car started to run bad and backfire. I limped the car home.
I'm assuming the plastic guides broke. This means oil pan will need to be pulled also. (I have a leaky oil pan BTW)
Mechanic thinks the best way to attack this repair is to pull the engine entirely.
Labor amount is $1300 for repair, not including parts. Does this seam reasonable?

Sure it isn’t a blown spark plug? That would give the same symptoms.


If not it sounds more like a tensioner snapped.

I was watching a video of a Aviator engine. The broken guide lets the chain flop around causing this condition. A broken spark plug will continue to make a popping noise every revolution.
I do not have this condition.

Yes the engine needs pulled to do the oil pan.

Im going to wait 3-4 weeks before I get it fixed. Luckily I have my silver to drive (180,000 miles) and my Lincoln MKS W/ Ecoboost (103k) and it’s faster than the Marauder. Im going to add a real oil pressure gauge and replace the many burnt out bulbs in the dash and both meters. Im also going to get the HVAC bulbs replaced and get the heater switch re-soldered.

I'm guessing this is the timing chain guides?
If they break what causes the poor running and back firing, a damaged sensor?
I would think if it was valve timing it would be pretty well fatal wouldn't it?

OEM being plastic it is guaranteed they will need replacing some time. Do them with metal ones before they get bad requiring pan removal = much cheaper.

If the guides break, the timing chain starts to flop around. This causes the timing to be off. Also running long in this condition can damage the sprockets. I had to limp home for about 2 miles.

I'm trying to understand this in case it happens to me.
What timing goes off? Valve timing or ignition timing?
I would think if it's valve timing the motor would be toast.
